What exactly is happening when you throw a rod threw your block?

What causes this primarily, detonation?

Usually a lubrication problem, or RPMs too high.

Hmm... can any elaborate a little more on this? Like while the RPM's are too high, whats happening inside the engine causing it too throw a rod? Or when there's not enough lubrication whats happening inside the cylinders?

Also, does detonation occur more so in boosted cars?

Oil starvation/foaming. It can even be a time when it was ran low on oil a year ago starting to rear it's head now (burned/leaked/wasn't filled properly after oil change).

The higher the cylinder pressure/temperatures, the higher the risk of detonation (so yes, for boosted).

Simply put: exceeding the design limits of the conrod. This is usually due to excessive force, whether from high speed or high combustion chamber pressure. The combustion chamber pressure can be due to sheer (not SHEAR) power, or due to abnormal combustion dynamics, such as detonation, which dramatically raises cylinder pressure.

Lubrication issues typically do not cause catestrophic failure in this manner. Those are more likely to cause you to spin a bearing or get severe rod knock.

My last motor had a clogged oil galley in the crank on cylinder 8. Instead of spinning a bearing it decided to sieze the connecting rod to the crank, snap the rod, and fling that bitch out the side of my block. I've seen plenty of carnage like this in high horsepower applications but nothing like this in a near stock N/A setup.

There are myriad ways to destroy a connecting rod. I had a timing chain fail in a 5.0L while cruising at ~2K rpm on the highway. The chain wrapped up around the crank gear and all hell broke loose.

I had a bend rod due to hydro lock, basically, water was sucked up through the air intake and made it into the cylinders.. it's hard to compress liquid!

Yep, that's yet another way. The rod hanging on the wall to the right of the shelf was bent via hydrolock.

Hydro lock bent a rod in my 2001 GT. It definitely doesn't pay to have one of those cheap CAI's that put the filter in your bumper/fender well. I managed to suck enough water up driving 45mph down the interstate in the rain.
