clutch pedal problem HELP!!!

when i push the clutch pedal down i get about half way down with the pedal and then it makes a loud snapping noise and the pedal goes to the floor with no tension and it is like im not even pushing the clutch pedal in because i cannot shift into or out of gear. then when i lift my foot off the clutch the pedal comes back but as it does it makes a bunch of little clicking noises. what needs to be done to fix this and iis it easy enough to do in the driveway? luckily it happened only about a 2 or 3 miles from home and i was able to get it into 2nd gear and crawl her home in 2nd the whole way.
o yea and it is a 2000 GT

no i do not but i dont think it is the linkage because the linkage seems fine when i push the clutch it works about half way then it snaps and the little plastic disc thing that the linkage is hooked to goes right back to where it was so i think it is something before the linkage

I think the guys could possibly be talking about the linkage beyond that, as in outside the car. It's also possible that the pressure plate inside the clutch itself is messed up.
