Trans rebuild, need suggestions.

I decided to rebuild the tr3650. I already ran into some issues. First, the damn "C" clips are a pain in the ass! I already broke a set of c clip pliers (harbor freight). I just got a set of heavy duty ones from local auto parts store and was able to get one clip off, but I can't get the fifth gear clip off! The pain for me with these is that they don't have the holes that you stick the pliers into(not sure if that is standard for these or not). On top of that, how the hell do you get the speedo gear off without the special puller tool that the manual shows?
