Re: drop gas tank

Me personally I never tried dropping a tank with alot of gas in it, I always ran the car til the check fuel light comes on to make sure the least amount of gas is present... I think this is the easiest way, and being a Mustang it shouldnt take to long to run it to E

Isn't that the truth! Thankfully I don't drive mine very far.

do you have a floor jack?

put a piece of plywood or something on the jack to give the tank a little more surface area to sit on and jack it up right to the tank....loosen the tank and slowly let the tank down...

it sounds logical in my head, but i have never done it

thats the way to do it. Just be sure to disconnect the filler neck.

the 2 times i did it i used a lift but could do it with the same results in the driveway. loosen the filler neck overflow line/retaining bracked bolt and the evap canister hoses. dont forget the fuel line to the engine. after supporting the tank remove the bolts holding the tank straps . let the tank down about 6 inches to gain acess to the electrical connections on the top of the tank. while the tank is at this point remove the filler neck from the tank making sure NOT to damage the filler neck gromet/gasket thing. after all is disconnected let the tank the rest of the way down.

a word of advice. make DAMN SURE you DON'T pinch the wires when putting the new pump in. The shop I took it to and I made that mistake and the fuel gauge started to read empty.

good luck and if you need some help pm me and ill see what i can do.

Just pulled a tank off a cobra parts car. Just follow the instructions above, takes about 5 minutes and works best if you have a buddy to help steady it. The tank we pulled was full of fuel which made it a bit more difficult.

Just an fyi, I have a complete, low mileage 03 cobra IRS if somebody is looking for one.

If it is full...your going to loose a gallon or two. I had to do it on my 99. The passenger side is taller than the portion with the fuel pump. Its not that big of a deal. Make sure you get the fuel filter wrench before you start. Good luck!
