header install

ive had bbk shorty headers sitting in my garage for like 6 months now, already have slp's and o/r h pipe which sound badass by the way. has anyone done the install before that can give me any pointers? i know the motor has to come off the k member but what else? i refuse to pay 8hrs of labor for something that seems so simple, just time consuming. if anyone has any tips let me know, i should be doing the swap next wednesday. just ordered some black deep dish bullit 18x10 and 18x9's w/ the chrome lip and 4.10's. im thinking my car should be pretty fast after the header install and gears. i have the diablosport tuner already as well for the gear install. basically i will have slp catback, mac o/r hpipe, tuner, and 4.10's on 18'' rims. i plan on taking it to the track when i get all this shit done. anyone have track times from a similar setup? id like to compare my results.

if you have a pretty good knowledge base around cars, then you will be able to do it. it is a grueling task and very time consuming!

Its pretty simple if you have the right tools. If you have access to a lift, it will make your life easier. You are going to also need some sort of engine holder when you drop the K-member. Other than that just a big variety of sockets, swivels, a stud exracter (dont remember the size)and a couple long extensions. Basically secure the engine holder to one nut on the passenger and one on the drivers side of the engine, lift the car, remove tires, disconnect the rest of the exhaust, remove the egr valve, disconnect abs sensor and brake lines, there are like 2 or 3 hoses to disconnect from the front, disconnect the steering shaft, and you can remove the 10 bolts on the K-member ( make sure you have a stand of some kind to hold the member or remove 8 bolts lower the car to the floor remove the other 2 and leave it on the floor) Now you can take the headers off. Remove the studs with the extracter. Your going to have to pull the dip stick tube out. Its in there good so you are going to have to pry it out. if you use the supplied bolts pay attention the the shorter ones These are the pain in the @zz ones. Thereis one on the driver side you are going to have to start before you put the header up. This was the hardest part holding them in place to start the bolts. Your going to have to bend the dip stick tube a little to route it through the headers. Now you can put it all back together. Notes: When you are bolting the K-member back up make sure to connect the steering shaft back up. On the drivers side it would probably make it a lot easier to hook the egr back up before you bolt the header on or just remove it up top at the throttle body. If you dont have a tuner to turn off the O2 sensors you will need MIL eliminator and extensions or it will throw the CEL. Hope this helps and if i forgot anything please let him know.

He pretty much put everything out there. Have a buddy that is pretty good with cars, to be there with you if your not. If you have the general knowledge down you should be fine. The biggest thing i can say is just have alot of patience!!! Things are not going to come off smooth and it wont just bolt back up nicely, so take your time and be patient. Then let us know how it went.

That is a very true statement, and get stage 8 header bolts. I have built my car so I can slip the motor in with them on!

i have 2 friends that are going to help me. one is a mechanic, and a few cases of beer does not compare to almost 800 bucks. but i just wanted to know what was involved so i kinda know what is going to be involved. ill pick up some stage 8 header bolts. one of the shops that quoted me had that in the quote. so the gaskets from bbk suck or what? do i need new ones? we have an engine hoist and air tools ready. i have some cash aside in case we fuck something up and my sister is in germany so i have her car to drive just in case. thanks for the how-to write up it should help alot thats what i was looking for.

i got everything off and then realized that i had to retap the heads cause the stage 8 bolts are a little larger in diameter, but i couldnt reach it without pulling the motor out. so disconnected the drive shaft and whatnot to pull the motor up and retapped everything. got the headers on and there is 1 friggin bolt that wont go in, i think its partially cross threaded cause it starts going in crooked. so gotta take it all back off again and do it over cause i dont wanna blow the gasket out after all this work. anyways i should be finishing on wednesday when i have some more time. this swap is rediculous by the way
