new engine knocking noise... great.

well today i noticed that my engine seems to have a slight knocking noise. i hadn't noticed it because i always have the radio on, i dont know when this started. i drove it to my friends house and i had the radio off for once and i could hear it when the engine got past about 2k rpms, it doesn't sound like its in the valvetrain, its not a tick.. its a deeper knocking sound. i've also noticed that my car doesn't have as much power as it used to. i thought i was just used to the car and it didn't feel as fast anymore cause i drive it everyday, but i think there might be a problem.

the engine was cold when i noticed this, i'm going to check again tomorrow after i let it warm up.

i've been running synthetic 5W-20 every 3000 miles. most recent oil change has less than 500 miles on it. does anyone know what this might be? i'm hoping its not a rod knocking.

Bob, saying it's a deep knocking sound is not good. If the knock changes in harmony with the rpm, it's probably a rod or main bearing. You may want to have someone listen to it, or pull the pan and check before a rod comes out the block.

Well I don't want to be Captain Negative Pants, but deep knocking sounds usually don't go away. Just take it easy on your baby until you know for sure, Bob.

Are you sure it's not just a pinging sound. Because our modulars seem to always, even when brand spanking new, have a slight pinging noise. And if you usually drive with the radio on, you might not have heard it.

thanks, zip.. i'm going to drive it real easy until i find out whats up. thankfully school is only 10 miles away and 35mph speedlimit the whole time. i just can't afford this to be happening to me right now. i might have to sell the bike if i have to do some serious engine repairs.

I hear ya. As 02 Stang posted, these modulars do indeed tick, sometimes fairly loud, which I believe is the injectors.
But if you say it's a deep knock, just remember that rolling in a new set of bearings in the bottom end, or even putting a new rotating assembly in, is a lot cheaper than if you have it come apart on you while you're driving. Having a bearing seize up even at low rpm can shoot a rod right out the block.

i definately dont want to go through a blown engine. that would be shitty times. i'll talk to my dad tomorrow and see what he says.. i mean if worse comes to worse it looks like i can save up and get a forged rotating assembly for $1649.. thats nothing compared to replacing the whole block, not to mention if the piston decides to shoot through a head..

Yea I wouldn't chance anything that could cause a bigger problem, if there is one.

Pray for some good weather and take the bike to school, and hope its a cheap fix.
