powershifting, worth it or no?

well i went to track and times werent what i wanted, a friend suggested power shifting to increase times a little bit.

by this i mean, never letting off the gas when you shift, slam clutch, slam shifter and release fast. i wouldnt do it from 1st to 2nd, just 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to forth.

i have a pro 5.0 shifter.

now the real question is should i do this or not?

i mean the shifter has the stops so don't think id bend a fork....
opinions?

It all depends on how good of a driver you are .. its not slamming the gear the and clutch its working it quickly and effectively .. if you're on stock tires .. and you just slam it .. you're just gonna spin on the shifts and not really be effective with it .. you want to work the clutch so the tires even if they spin a bit .. it will propel you forward ..

i power shift mine, you just have to be sure you can do it correctly. if you dont do it right you can mess up the internals.

I lift a little. Only time I ever tried it I hit the rev limiter hard and threw a belt.

Tried it once before I put in my MGW. Let's just say it didn't go well. LOL By the time I got it back in gear I was at the rev limiter. The car went sideways and I mean completely sideways. Scared the sh*t out of me. Haven't tried it since. Since you have an after market shifter get a new clutch with an aluminum flywheel and a aluminum driveshaft and shifting should be cake.

Like I said .. it depends on how good a driver you are .. and what kind of power your car puts down .. I don't ever power shift my boys 03 whipple cobra ..but my GT .. I don't ever not power shift if I'm running .. I have never worried about bouncing it off the rev limiter cause I don't miss when I'm going through the gears.. but thats just me .. again .. depends on how good you are with the pedals and shifter

I swore off power shifting years ago. My car didn't have a rev limiter and I never ever missed second. Well, maybe just once. I'm still not sure why but the results were grim. The next day I was looking for both a new engine and a new transmission.

At what rpm is the rev limiter set?

its at stock rev limiter, im not going to play around too much this year, until i can reset my limiter to 6k. i think stock is around 6200?

1 tried it 3 times to day from 3rd to forth,

1st time went fine,

2nd time hit rev limiter

3rd release gas about 1/2 way and it was fine

not going to play around anymore until i can set the rev limiter to what i want

Don't you have a Xcal 2? You can set the limiter to what you want.

Its not worth it unless you wanna destory your gears, your crankshaft, your syncros and the nerves in your right arm. Even if you got good at it, the point in RPMs where the clutch assembly separates by itself is very high and too much strain on your engine for regular driving. I once missed 3rd in my 1996 GT at 80+ mph and the shock wave from that gear-bang went up my arm and knocked my sunglasses off...the rest of the day I had a visible 'tick'. Even if someone GAVE me a Mustang to destroy at no expense I STILL wouldnt try it, ouch.

+1

I never powershift, because of too many possiblities of causing major damage to your Transmission, Clutch, or Gears.

ya i have an xcal, i tried setting the rev limiter to what i want but it never worked

guess ill just have to wait until next year when i get my dyno tune

either way im done doing that for this year i think, next year when i have new springs ill try it again, then the springs wont fail at high rpm

just dont miss a shift... its all about timing... since i got my upr blue thunder i havnt missed a shift.. and yes it really does cut down on your times... and most of the time it takes a good driver to speed shift properly. you know you are doing it right when you burn through second gear and your tire marks are only a foot and a half apart... if you are good and quick your rpms will only jump up a couple hundred... but thats after plenty of practice... but... like they said... if you do miss a gear it reaks havoc on your trans and makes it harder everytime.

I powershift mine everytime I got to the track. 1st to 2nd, 2nd to third, and 3rd to forth. It dropped my times around .1-.2 of a second.

its like second nature if im driving aggresively...

if you dont try to pull the shifter through the center console, its not as bad as everyone says. I have seen people literally put all of their body weight into it and try to break something... and yes, that is bad

You have to be comfortable with your car, know its limits. I rip it to where its engaged in the next gear... not to where it bounces off the bottom of the gear box
