Just bought my 99 gt

Just bought my 99 mustang GT and have a few questions that you guys might be able to help me out with.

First of all I am a noob when it comes to working on cars, so bare with me please. The dealership did not know if it had any mods down to it, the only thing they said they knew it had a stage 2 clutch in it. Which I am not even sure is correct.

So my first question is how do I check to see if it does have a stage 2 clutch in it? Second question is my speedo is off 10mph, what can cause that and what is the best way to fix that? How would I check to see if it has the 4.10 gears or not?

Thanks,
Frank

welcome to MM
if your speedo is off, somebody installed gears in the rear end. the best way to check if 4.10's are installed is to jack up the car and put it on jack stands. now, rotate the driveshaft. if it rotates a little more than 4 times for a single rotation of the rear wheels, you probably have 4.10's. if you get about 3 3/4 turns of the driveshaft to one rotation of the rear wheels, you have 3.73's. if it's almost 4 turns, you have 3.90's.
as for the clutch, the only way to tell would be to drop the tranny and have a look at what's bolted to the flywheel. i'm not sure why some one would put a stage 2 clutch on a stock car, unless the previous owner had a bunch of mods then took them off to sell back to a dealership.

you can get the speed recalibrated by taking it to the shop when you swap gears it should be done but the previous owner prolly didn't.. I am gonna agree with 00vabchgt.. he prolly had more bolt ons then took them off when he traded in/sold the car. usually the first and only mod isn't 4:10 gears..

yeah, the previous owner probably just took off what he could in his driveway. gears are a lot more involved than a throttle body or CAI

same with a clutch.. I keep all my stock parts.. I figure unless I sell to a private owner they will have no value.. the dealer I trade it into won't give me more for the car so might as well switch it back.

Thats why you just sell it outright. You will always get more for the car that way, weather it's modded or not. Dealers are always going to rip you off, and go and sell it for alot more than what they give you for it. So why not sell it to a buyer yourself?!!

That's a big IF.. I don't plan on selling or trading my Stang anytime soon but if it was a trade in I'd switch the parts out.

Ok here are things that I can see about the car.

1. C & L cold air intake
2. C & L trueflow intake plenum
3. 18" Saleen Mustang Rims
4. Flowmaster exhaust

Have not had time to check to see what gears it has...be one of the next things I do.

That is what is visible to me.

Thanks for all the info so far!

c&l is good, i got the same plenum on mine. as for the flowmasters, if he put those on then he probably also did the mid pipe and headers. look under the car if u see piping shaped like an x its an x mide pipe, of if its shaped like an h its an h mid pipe, they may or may not be catted, tho if u got it from a dealer im guessin if it wasnt catted they are now so it would pass inspection. headers are a little bit harder to find out about...search and online catalog for mustang headers, get the general idea of what they look like, then go out and look down the side of your engine block about 3 quarters of the way down. trust me i know its a pain in the ass i had some mods already done to mine when i bought it and it took me a while to figure it all out. you could also call your insurance company and they can give you the previous owners info and contact him to find out exactly what you have for product in the car, thats what i would do if you're not much of a gearhead.
good luck

Nice buy, you need to think about what the driving habbits of the last onwer. With those mods it could have been driven really hard. Take the car and get it througly checked out by a good shop. That will give you a starting point, and make you aware of any parts that are about fail. Good luck and post some pics!

If it has 18's with a bigger tire that could be the cause of the speed calibration being off. That would be sweet if you already had gears but now that you say that you may not
