Wouldnt a spun bearing/broken rod/etc... show signs in the oil?

Is the noise jumping from point to point, or is it always in the same spot?

Def. check the plugs...very good tell tale sign of problems

I had a really bad clanking noise coming from my car, so bad that i could feel it in the floor board...turned out to be the idler tensioner. Worth a shot, but check and see if you have scrap marks around the timing cover near your tensioner.

If your looking to go cheap, you can get a donor motor from car-part.com I used them to get a donor motor...the motor i got has about 80k on it, runs very strong especially for only $800 I'm in the process now of building the old block.

Here are the price numbers i'm looking at....
Magnaflux: $50
Engine bore: $150
Block cleaning: $50
Rotating assembly from MMR: $1700

So about $2k to get the bottom end setup right
