My poor, poor engine...

Well, I was riding around earlier with a friend, and ended up getting on it through first and part of second gear. I let off, came to a stop light, and instantly noticed a loud clanking sound which increased in sound and frequency between the clanks with engine RPM.

Parked the car, and popped the hood, and listened... it was an extremely loud 'clanking' sound, not subtle at all. I killed the engine, made a few calls to get a ride back home (which was unfortunately 20mi away) and started the car back up... the sound was damn near completely gone. To make sure of this, I revved the engine up to about 1500-1750 RPMs, and all of the sudden the car died with a squealing sound. I haven't tried to start the car since then, so no clue if my engine is siezed up.

No CEL, no fluid loss, nothing readily visible...

This is on a '99 GT with about 130,000 miles... Anyone have an idea as to what this could be? I have a few ideas, but I'm definitely no mechanic when it comes to stuff like this.

I really can't afford to spend multiple thousands of dollars at this moment, but fuck it, if my motor is fucked, crate motor here I come

Edit: Also wanted to clarify that this was a very 'metallic' sounding noise. Also wanted to clarify that at idle, it was about 2 clanks per second.

i just spun a rod bearing in my car a few weeks back. it sounded like marbles rolling around inside the block. the engine shut itself off before i could turn it off, and the sound never went away by itself, either.

you said clanking, not knocking. it could be a rod but it also could be a number of other things.. one of your timing chain tensioners could have broke or something?

I'm thinking it's a spun bearing, like has been mentioned a few times... Cranked it up today to get it on the flatbed, and it seemed to sound quite a bit different than last night, it sounds almost exactly like the spun bearing videos on youtube... I'm thinking it could be a rod instead though.

Either way, if I have to drop another motor in, 302 or 351 here I come :-D

On a side note, does anyone know a site with good prices on motors?

Usually, this is a bearing issue. You're not pushing the power to get rid of a rod.

i bought a forged rotating assembly from VT last month and i'm still waiting for it. pistons are backordered from Diamond. a few other people i've talked to have had these types of issues with VT. they make great engines, but if you need it in a hurry, i'd go someplace else. DSS makes pretty good stuff from what i've heard, as does Livernois.

Usually spun bearings are caused by a lack of oil.

Checked my oil earlier, and it was fine. Last change was about 4k miles ago with synthetic.

did you check your spark plugs? Ive launched two spark plugs out of the head in my 2000.......its a known problem with windsor built engines. When this happens it sounds aweful and the car will barely run.
