Setting the timing?

Could someone explain to me how i would go about setting the timing on my 03gt after i change my heads? I know this sounds stupid but i havent had to worry about timing in about 2 years. Deisels dont need timing other than fuel injector pump timing which is rare in my field. The last time i had to set my timing was when i had a new motor installed in my 90 full size bronco back in 00' and it had points lol. So any Forrest Gump Step by step directions wont offend me in anyway, i just hope its simple like i remember.

You don't need to adjust timing for a head change, unless you just want to bump it up for alittle more power. You have to use a chip or handheld tuner / reflash.

Re: Setting the timing?

So there is no timing belt/chain in the mod motor? Honestly ive never cracked my motor open yet. The last time i did a head gasket i remember the timing belt running up to the cam. I was just sitting here thinking about it was all. I do have the Diablosport Predator tuner but i dont remember anything other than resetting the peramiter for my 4.10 gears and installin the Diablotune, and removing top speed limiter.

all i got to say if you are changing heads on our motors you better know what you are doing. The crank has to be at the right position and they chains have to be on the right teeth for everything to work right. Cause if you are off by one or make a mistake say goodbye to your heads, cause your valves will be proper fu**%^.

Re: Setting the timing?

i know that, thats why i asked. Ive seen smashed valves before i know the penalty for screwing it up lol. Ive also mixed up a head bolt before and snapped it off in a block, i know how that goes too. I havent done anything on a regular gas motor in a couple years and a lil rusty so was just lookin for a refresher, and maybe a notice if theres anything new i might miss. I havent ever worked on anything this new before that as i overstate isnt diesel.

I dont know about the 03 but on my 98 GT, there is a notch on the crankshaft that lines up with a point on the timing chain cover that is labeled TDC for Top Dead Center. It's at about 10 o'clock if looking at it straight on. With those lined up, you should be good to go, if it's the same as on my car...

if you are determined to do it yourself, go buy the haynes manual for the car and maybe the SHM mod motor book cause that has alot of info on doing the heads also.

While the Haynes manual is probably the best tech manual for a stock mustang, it is lacking on many different topics. It is a great book to have and sometimes you will get lucky and sometimes you wont.
