Question on gears...

I know that set of aftermarket gears is one of the first mods that most people suggest and /or buy for themselves. After researching some different ratios, I know that the lower the gear (higher number) the better performance you get but at the cost of higher RPM and lower fuel mileage. This question is for those of you have aftermarket gears. Is the lowered fuel economy and higher RPM as big a deal as people make it out to be? Is the acceleration enough of a pro to counteract these two cons??

Also I noticed that the 4.10's were about a hundred buck more than the 3.73's. Is that an indicator of the benefits of the lower gear?

Well to start off, u only lose about 2-3 mpg with higher gears, and then the difference is if u go f/i go with 3.73, but if u want all motor 4.10's most will argue, and for the price arguement, u can find them about the same just gotta shop around, try looking at drivetrain specialists... they are an ebay power seller, with good prices

hope this helps

They do have most of it covered. But for a little help on what your RPM's will be, go outside measure the diameter of your cars tires with the rim, then go to the bottom of the page here.

That should help you out a bit. Personally if you want a weekend car or more of a drag car 4.10's all the way, F/I or not. But if it is a daily driver then 4.10's could get a little annoying to the average Joe.

I have to argue this here...I dont drive slow (although not recklessly either), and I went from 3.73 to 4.10 and finally to 4.56, and for a 13 gal fuel tank with only a 25" wheel, im not turning obnoxious rpms in o.d. and get 18-24 mpg depending on how I drive it. And for a car thats almost 20 years old and all, I personally think its good. I get the impression everyone thinks you can mod a car, motor and gears and still think youre gonna get 30 mpg?

I'm running 4.30's in my car and I drive it everyday. I would say the gains in acceleration is well worth the few hundred rpm's on the highway. Plus on the highway with a lower gear you can just leave it in o/d and pass people with ease. Go with FRPP for the gears, they are the best.

I reccomend the 3.90 motives...you get the edge about the 3.73, but just less then the 4.10's so you can still Boost it....i tack 2,450 at 70mph in 5th and lost about 2mpg on the hwy drive good with the cruise set on 65

i have the motive 4.10s and I have had them for awhile and they work great. no whining or nothing like that but i believe thats more in the job by the mechanic doing the install. i have a 125 shot of nitrous and love the 4.10s with the juice.

if you are worried about gas milage, don't be cause with the lower gears you running higher rpm on the highway your car will actually be running more effecient at say 2500rpms, at least better than at 1500. If you notice a decrease its just because you are getting on it more. And whos buys a mustang for gas milage anyways lol

ive had em for 10,000 miles...no problems, and i dont see why they would pose any problem that a 3.73 or a 4.10 wouldnt give you....if someone sets em up right you should have no trouble regardless the brand or ratio

My gas mileage has actually gone up since I got my gears. When I had my nitrous and cams put in I averaged 17 MPG. Then I had my 410's put in last weekend and have gone through 2 tanks of gas and have averaged 19.6 with them. Go figure on that one.
