Make My Hood Scoop Funcional?

The "GIRL" i bought my car from felt like it was a good idea to take out the honey combs in the hood scoop, so now i have all this air going into my scoop but it had nowhere to go and when i drive on the freeway the scoop looks like its trying to break off, should i just cut my hood a little bit so air goes down under the hood or just dont even mess with it? my car is a 2001 mustang gt im planing on getting a Cobra R hood for it but thats going to take some time
please help me out, all opinions and suggestions are appreciated

My suggestion is to go to a wreck yard and get the honeycomb piece, making it 'functional' will cause more problems than it'll fix.

buy a replacement honeycomb and put it back together.

that scoop is going to fall off soon if you don't.

you can get them on ebay for under $10.00

yeah, it's not worth the effort to "make it functional"

Functional as in "RAM", never. Functional as in "cools the engine", easy.

I know you guys think Im nuts but I did that. It has helped big time down here in the Florida heat and humidity. Im not sure about doing in freezing weather but its been a benefit here.

I drilled out most the holes in the honeycomb ( yes, I put lights in 4 of the holes and sealed it with a clear sealant). I put a screen behind the holes in the honeycomb to keep the bugs and shit out. In the hood itself, I drilled holes so that the air can spill down into the engine bay. The holes are on a "high" part of the hood so water never makes it into the engine during heavy rain. I then cut a rectangle of insulation out of the underside of the hood to allow the air in.

Ive driven at 115 and my scoop does not move. Bugs do not get in and neither does pouring rain.

I guess the only drawback is that you gotta have the balls to drill your hood. Once you do it, theres no turning back.

Of course, I painted the mesh silver for a "metal" look. With the holes being drilled, it looks like RAM but that was secondary to this rig job anyway. I needed to cool the engine.

I made mine work also. I removed the scoop and cut out the piece that is molded into the hood. Then I put the scoop back on without the honeycomb. It's bolted on and I've gone plenty fast and it's yet to move. I plan on riviting a brace to it just for insurance. I noticed that my plenum doesn't get nearly as warm as it did before.

if you want ram air cant you just make a box, cut a hole in the hood throw a k&n filter in there and route it to your intake?

if you remove the honeycomb and don't cut your hood for a place for the air to go,bye bye scoop. hold a cup out the window and feel the resistence, then remove the bottom and repeat--same idea

I made mine functional, I just reinforced the mounting points with panel bond (used to glue door pannels on). ive gone 155mph since then and that thing is sturdy as hell. Plus after racing around all night, the plenum stays pretty cold. It can hurt anything, plus the honeycomb looks gay. I just hate fake scoops

Yea, pretty simple to do, just follow the lines. Used a dremel tool. Then put some door edge guard on it to clean it up

If you really must make it "functional", you could also do one of these... but it's kinda pricy...

I'll take a daytime pic with the lights off. You can kind of see how the holes in the honeycomb make a difference. Next time I open it up to repaint it, I'll take some pics of the inside. Its not hard to do.

i like the idea of making it functional but how about making it taller. I would like to make nine about 1 inch taller all the way around. then cut as much of the hood away as i can. followed by beefing the scoop mounting structure and adding some thin alumunim air diverters to make the air go where i want it. I work with sheetmetal all day and can make a bracket for you guys that want a stiffiner for the mounting of your scoop. I will be selling my to a gental man on here in a couple days but can make a pettern and everything for a stiffiner bracket/ air splitter in 1. if there is a big enough demand i can have my puddy who owns a metal fab shop whip some up. just let me know. all you will have to do is locate the bracket on the hood using the scoop studs and nuts. them simply mark around the inside of the bracket and cut on the line. then for the insulater you can simply cut a hole under the scoop opening and drill some new holes along the edge on the opening for the pins to hold the insulater in. I will go home tonight and get an idea of that is going to have to be done and start a design. brackets should be around $20 depending on how long they take to make and how thick the aluminum is has to be.
