Thud/Clunk Noise

Hey guys the problem just came about around a week ago I want to say. When the car is at a dead stop and I go into reverse, as I let out the clutch there's like a thud/clunk coming from the rear of the car. It sometimes does it too when I downshift. When I'm on the float or just cruising normally it doesn't do it. Any ideas? Like I said it's coming from the rear of the car...

excess backlash in the rear differential? un bolt driveshaft and wiggle the pinion flange. little noise/clunk is ok but not too much.
