Major engine problems, please help!

I just drove back to work from lunch and my engine started detonating really bad. Almost like I was in too high of a gear or something, except I was in second and it was sounding horrible. I turned into the parking lot at work and my car just died! I tried to restart it and it just kept turning over and didn't sound like it waf firing at all. It sounded like it may have gotten WAY out of time. Anybody know what it might be?

I figured it out. It is overheating. Strange though, I let it idle and refilled the radiator and it never overheated until I started driving down the road. When it got too hot again I pulled over and opened the cap and the coolant level was low but before I could get more water in it it rose back up to full again. I turned the heater on full blast and drove the rest of the way to work and didn't have even the slighest hiccup from the temp. gauge

You may have air in the system. Our cars are famous for this. You can't get the system full just utilizing the overflow. There is a vent at the top of the system. You have to remove the shaker to get to it. Remove the filler plug with a 1/4 drive and fill from there. Start the car and let it circulate. Add as needed. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks. The way it's overheating is strange. It will stay in the mid temp. range and do just fine for around 4-5 miles and all of a sudden the needle will skyrocket towards the red zone. If i turn it off and releive some pressure from the cap and restart it it runs fine for a while again. and never overheats at idle. It's making me crazy

I had a similar problem with my '98 GT. It was a copper tube that was inside a sleeve that had cracked and at high rpm's it would spurt out. Check all your hoses and lines that carry coolant to make sure theres no leak.

Go simple first, check hoses, circulation, and first thing I would replace is the thermonstat, change it to a 160 degree, this is really true if the orginal is still in the motor. And yea ya can check them but it its out , so just change it. Also check to endsure your fans are coming on, if not than back trouble the fans ans control. Like say start out easy and than ease on back. W.P.
