Melting Sparkplugs

4 plugs melted down after a track day/road course event (melted2.jpg- this pick is of 4 from the passenger side, 2 melted, and 2 melted on drivers side). Changed them out and everything was running good.

Took the stang out and got on it in third gear and ended up doing this to the 2nd plug from firewall on the passenger side. (smashed.jpg) There should be no physical way for the piston to contact the plug, right? Is this detonation?

Car is a 2004 GT with D1SC at 13 lbs boost.
Plugs are NGK TR-6 at .35 gap

Do you guys have a clue as to why this could be happening?

Have you had this car dyno tuned? I would hope you reply with a yes. but either way, youre getting serious combustion temps and youre just burning up the plugs. The plug youre talking about is cylinder 3, but it doesnt matter what cylinder because you have 4 others.

The plugs you have are fine and the gap is fine. No real problems with youre setup. I just cant get the tune out of my mind. sounds like youre real lean. There is no piston to valve clearance problems because if there was before the plug youre valves would be hurt. Its just detonation causing youre plugs to melt away.

Is this just happening on one side >? Is it just cyl. 1,2,3,4. Put new plugs in it and let it run and remove the oil fill cap and see if you have smoke. If you do you ruined youre pistons and the rings are letting it by. Just a quick way to check. Also you may have a clogged injector. But its happening on multiple cylinders.

Do you run this car at the track ? Do you notice any performance problems lately ?

I guess i'll let you chime back .

Matt

If your lucky, you might be able to save the car before it chews up your pistons and rings. I've been in those shoes before. I'd give your motor another 2 weeks before the damage really settles in. Might want to get in the spark plug holes to try and pull out the leftover pieces of the plugs. I'd agree that detonation was a big factor in this one. Your running big numbers on a stock setup.

the motor is fine, the pressure and detonation is doing that to the plugs. that is a lot of boost to be running through the bottom end. i would try the zex plug, and pulling out more timing. what is the total timing?

that doesnt mean his motor is going to blow also. what plug were you running? when people start to push a motor, everything has to be done as close to perfect as possible. if not, that is when shit starts to happen. i have collapse plenty of plugs trying to push every little bit out of my motor. nothing bad happen to mine, just had to keep adjusting and tuning till it was right. a motor will run at its best right before detonation and i have seen some run a lot stronger when it would a little. but especially with a power adder, there are more factors to deal with. if not delt with and done correctly, that is when shit goes south.
