Camshaft Question
Well Cams and heads (either ported and polished stocks or some patriot heads) and i have a few questions. What exactly is a lift? duration? and everything else associated with cams? Just tell me pretty much everything you know. What is the difference between stage 1 2 and 3 cams?
I've heard that you should go with a stage 2 cam with some new springs. Are they something you can do yourself?

i just know the very basic is that with a bigger cam your valvues for intake and exhaust stay open longer...depending on the size of lift to allow more air in and push more air/exhaust out, giveing more power. And it sounds cool at idle!!

How hard is it to install a pair of cams? If i do it myself i'll probably do a cam that i dont have to go into the heads to install new springs...

It is not a difficult task. It just takes some planning and patience.

Its realavitly easy. Timing them is the most crutial part. For the first timer I suggest taking off the timing cover, but that is not required. But if you go for a semi radical cam, you will have to do valve springs, and will give you more problems.

Possible, but a real PITA............ The size of the springs and the distance to the camshaft pillars makes it difficult to remove the springs.

yes, an attachment to an aircompressor that screws into the spark plug hole, so that the valves dont drop is needed but thats it.

if the piston is at tdc the valve won't fall enough that you can't retrieve. if you have the otc tool it makes life easier to change springs.
did not mention year of car but if you get apiece of 1" pipe slightly longer than the length of the cams and use the tool it makes it much easier to change springs on car.

Comp grinds some excellent cams. Having said that, I would either opt to have Comp cut some custom cams or get some cams from Hi-tech. It is my opinion that the off-the-shelf Comp cams have a little too much lobe seperation to maximize NA performance. If you would like to have them grind you a pair of custom cams, I would be more than happy to PM what I would think is the best grind for your application.
