MPG. And I think it lets the engineers sleep better at nite knowing they have over engineered another simple operation.

skipping wont hurt a tranny. my grandfather has had a Toyota SR5 pickup for 23 years or so now and its only been through one, yes one clutch, and its still on the original tranny.

He skipped ALL the time in it and never took her above 3000 rpm. its pushing around 240,000 miles on her

I skip gears in 'the big truck', but "...can't find em, grind em" scares me in my own car...Oddly enough though I almost never use 1st in Mustangs...Ive skiped gears before but its more wear on your clutch cause youre holding it in a breath longer to find the gear and feathering it in high gears.
