Skip A Shift

is there any thing wrong with doing that under normal driving to try and save a lil gas. ive done it many times and the tranny does fine. i have the t-56, as some of u know. im just wondering if trannies are meant to be operated completely and exactly the way theyre meant to. i know other people do it too. i think its ok to do it but i dont know alot of things about tranny's. thanx in advance guys

before the alternator went out on the cobra i would go normal in 1st, normal in 2nd, skip 3rd, go normal in 4th. and sometimes i would wind out 4th a little and skip 5th and go into 6th.

You will be fine.

As you may know the F-bodies also have a t-56 tranny. We actually have 'Skip Shift' on our cars from the factory. It's a pain in the ass function that GM installed in the cars to help meet required MPG regulations. What it does is force the driver to go from first to fourth in anything less than 50% throttle.

+1 I've driven a couple of Vettes before, and it's such a pain at light throttle. The only ways around are with the clutch in the whole time, shift into 4th and then back to 2nd. Or you have to short shift the car and shift into second at like 5 or 6 mph which lugs the engine down a bit. Or you have to have your foot in it to avoid it making you shift to 4th from 1st.

i like taking off in second, shifting to 4th at 3k and then go to 5th right after. of course not going up hill or anything..

I cant stand taking off in first bc it winds out so fast. im not sure if my car has a gear in it already or if thats just how the mach is factory geared. but first gear doesnt last long.

and im on stock exhaust so all i can hear is motor and damn i hate hearing it winding out in first. shew its like. shift bitch shift haha

Whats the point of 1st to fourth lockout? Is that the GM engineers at work again?

I can't go fist to fourth without almost killing my engine.
