Yet Another Handheld Tuner Question!
Well....after reading numerous threads it seems that the consensus on a tuner is the SCT Xcal2. I have an '03 GT. I don't plan on S/Cing the car anytime soon but I'm planning on installing UDP's/Accufab 75mm TB/Plenum/JLT CAI. I already have 4.10's/MAC LT's/Prochamber mids/flow 40's. I think I'm going to wait until I install the UDP/CAI/TB-Plenum first before I tune the car. I have a set of O2 extensions I bought from American Muscle that I haven't installed yet but after reading it seems I won't need them since they can be turned off with the tuner. Is this correct? If I remember correctly there are 4 O2 points on the stock exhaust system. 2 before the cats and 2 after. I was able to plug in the 2 that are after(I think?). After the tune will I need to have any of them plugged in?
John

2 of them should be plugged into the long tubes and 2 should be plugged into the mid pipe. You can turn off the rear 02's with the tuner. but the fronts have to be plugged in and working. as far as the tuner I would get the new xcal3 since it is about the same price and its gonna have revised stuff in it the xcal2 didn't

I'm not sure, but I think a sct programmer can only do it,not the end user. I did not find where I could do it on mine

you dont need to do the O2 extensions if your running a O/R midpipe, and need to turn them off anyways. but remember, cali emissions are very strict, and there is no way you would pass like that.
and as Doc said, get the Xcal3, has stuff the Xcal2 has, and is a little bit better of a tuner. you can run a SCT tune for your car, but since you do have longtubes, and pretty much full bolt ons, you really should get your car on a dyno, and have the AF checked, and make sure everything is ok. most shops will even give you a discount on a custom tune if you buy the tuner from them. so that would be a smart move.

Whats the sense of buying a self tuner and then taking it to the dyno? Pointless IMO.
If you go with a self tuner, get yourself a wideband set up so you can dattalog. This way you will see your A/F along with other peramiters. Now you will be able to make adjustments accordingly. No need for a dyno unless you want to simply see what your putting down as far as RWHP.

Do you think, with the mild bolt ons that I have and am going to do, that a tune would be worth it? I was thinking that it would be more appropriate, say, after I go FI!

A tune is ALWAYS worth it. As far as dyno tuning, if you have and are just gonna stay bolt on power, call somebody like Texas Hot Rods or Brenspeed, tell them what you have, and they will send you an xcal3 loaded with a custom tune just for your setup. Dyno tuning in house will just ensure the very best tune you can get. They can only go off of what they have and know about your car. If you want the best possible tune you have to put it on the rollers. For most people though the custom tunes they send you for bolt on cars works very well.

I also think that you can get away without a Dyno tune with just bolt ons. Only if you want every livin' hp out of it, would I Dyno tune it. You can set the parameters with a hand held, but it won't give you hp readings. You'll be close though. I had all of my bolt-ons without a tune before I went with F/I and the car ran great. And that included an O/R X-pipe. It does turn off the rear O2s. I went with mil eliminators because of no tune yet. And yes, you will have to weld in a wide band setup if you want to tune. I'd finish all of your bolt-ons before deciding on a tune and/or/if you go F/I.,, decisions, decisions...
