make headlights clear and protect them

first of all no pics on this one, i just saw someone ask about it figured i would throw this up because i do it all the time, i will take pics the next time i do and edit the thread.

second, as for the protection part, it also appyly to brand new headlights, they will never have the problem of being faded, chipped up, or yellowed.

ok you will need:
water hose, or spray bottle full of just water
clean terry towels or anything but paper towels
800 1000 1500 and 2000 grit wet sandpaper
buffing compound
any buffer with a finishing pad on it

**if you do the first three steps, any detail shop will do the buffer part for like $10**

1. pop the hood and spray down the headlight undil it is soaked, spray down a 5"x5" piece of 800 sandpaper
2. being careful not to hit the bumper underneath sand the entire light until it is all the same foggyness, then sand for another few minutes. KEEP THE SANDPAPER AND LIGHT DRIPPING WET AT ALL TIMES!!. the 800 grit is what is going to take out all of the imperfections.
3. Repeat step 2 with each additional grit of paper, remember, the more time you spend making sure it all looks the same with each grit, the more clear your lights will be.
4. when your all done sanding, wash off all the sanding residue that will be all over the front of your car with running water, dont jsut wipe it off, it will leave tiny scratches, that white is plastic.
5. you, or a detail shop, open the hood, use the buffer and FOAM finishing pad with light cut/finishing compound and the buffer on about 1800rpm, careful not to burn the plastic as you buff it back to clear, touch it with your hand often, if it is hot, not warm but hot, your not moving the buffer enough and it will burn.
6. step back and enjoy your "new" headlights, you just saved yourself about 150 bucks.

these are the original lights in my 2000, they were trashed, most people would have replaced them.

the protection part: http://www.xpel.com/products/headlight_protection.asp?prevtype=1&prevyear=2000& prevmake=12&prevmodel=230&prevsubmodel=578&prevser ies=0&type=1&year=2000&make=12&model=230&submodel= 578&series=468##

about $65

very easy to install:
you will need:
spray bottle with water
heatgun
another set of hands

1. remove headlights-optional but i think it makes it alot easier because you can get whatever angle you need
2. clean thouroughly, then clean with alcohol NOT ACETONE, IT CAN EAT THE PLASTIC!
3. read instructions that came with the lights, test fit pieces.
4. heat up the headlight till it is good and warm with the heatgun, dont melt it
5. heat up the X-Pel
6. spray both the adhesive side of the X-Pel and the headlight with water, till they are dripping.
7. keep everything warm apply to light from center out, using scraper they provide to work out the air AS YOU GO. if you get to an area where it looks like its going to kink up, heat it till its soft with the heat gun and smooth it down little by little. dont wait till you put it on to try to get the air out, the covers are much too thick for this to be effective, and it will turn out bad.
8. wait till everthing is cool and reinstall lights.

i know some of you are leary about these staying attached or not being noticeable, i have never had an issuewithe either, and man do they work! unfortunatly the headlights those were on are gone after the wreck, i will post pics of the install of the new ones.
