should be fine, going over 6000rpms is gonna start to do minimal damage and eventually add up

an occasional rev never hurt anyone. but going around like a ricer revving at every thing with 4 wheels might start adding up!

any time you free rev a engine with no load on it, is not good for it. but a slight rev every now and then shouldnt hurt anything. if your boosted though i wouldnt rev it hard enough to build boost while free revving.

I would think "free" reving it within a decent rev range (i.e under 5k)would be less hard on the engine than reving it loaded. Its over loading motors than wear them out not under loading.

haha whats even worse is when they throw a $6000 turbo on a car that can't take it, then rev it and blow their rings saw a 97ish civic like that, smokin like crazy and complete with a 3 foot spoiler (good for 65hp of course)

well if that was true than putting a load on it must be tearing it apart internally...engines are made to do one thing, create power, now the engine will create more power with no load, right? so you put a load on the engine and its not going to rev up as quickly nor will it give you quite as much power(cept diesel which are designed to give more power at the highest lug point).now which time seams worse for the engine, turning freely as designed with minimal resistance or spinning with a high resistance on it...
no damage comes from reving an engine unless you go past the redline of the engine, either in gear or not. the only thing it will do is suck down your fuel quicker.

Done occasionally as described by the OP (up to 4k) won't hurt anything but serves no purpose useless you are diagnosing some issue...

Done frequently to the point of becoming a habit, at stop lights, etc. (and also to 4k or so), probably won't hurt anything but it still serves no purpose and will make you look like an @$$-hole...

The urban legend persists because in the old days, on carbureted high performance engines, "revving" the engine would cause the accelerator pump (pumps on a dual pumper or multi-carb setup) to squirt gobs of raw fuel into the manifold. So much that it could/would wash the oil off the cylinder walls and cause scoring/galling/etc and contaminate the oil...

Gasoline is great stuff as a fuel but it's a piss-poor lubricant.

Revving an engine with no load increases the compression load on the connecting rod and crank at BDC because the downward motion has not been resisted by any load on the crank.

However the greatest rod load remains a tension load at TDC on the exhaust stroke when the piston and rod want to fly out of the cylinder bore and there is little to no resistance to this because the exhaust valve is still open and the mass/velocity of the exiting gasses are actually pulling it upward.
