drag radials

so pretty soon i will be ordering 18 inch wheels to replace my stock 17s. ill probably be 9 wide in the front and 10 in the back. what i was wondering was how are drag radials for a daily driver. if i were to put sumimotos up front and drag radials in the back. do drag radials not last as long? any issues in the rain? etc etc thanks guys

just be careful in the rain
with DR's and you will be fine.

IMO sumimotos = poop

and no DR will not last as long as a regular tire will.

dont buy sumitomo's first off, tread wear is terrible, traction and handling is terrible, and they ride like they're square.
i would really suggest 275/35/18 BFG KDW2's for the front, they are awesome, great wear, excellent in the rain, and really grab the road too.

nitto DR's would be fine. run about 30-34PSI in them, and you should have no traction problems with your power, and should last 20K miles or so.

BFG, MT DR's are a different story though, they wear down ALOT faster, and are very dangerous in the rain.

DRs basically suck on wet roads. Why do you want DRs? Whats wrong with using a regular street radial?

nitto DR's are fine on wet roads, no problems at all.

regular street tire will not provide much traction, and if is spins every time you punch it in first, then i guarantee you will wear those down faster than you would that nitto DR that wouldnt spin with that power

BFG DRs kick ass! I had no problems in light rain with them. They actually hook pretty good on wet roads. You still need to watch out for hydroplaning if you live in an area where it rains alot. I got about 5000mi out of them, but they were worth every penny. I switched to BFG KDs and they totally suck compared to the DRs. Cant wait to burn them up and put some DRs back on.

i know many people who have wrecked their cars on wet roads with that tire, and no, they wernt screwing around, just driving normal.

5000 miles out of a set of tires suck.

nitto's are much better for the street. BFG's are in intermediate to the nitto, and the MT, and the MT is actually better in the rain than the BFG.

but he has and almost stock car, even if he was making 400RWHP, the 305/35/18 nitto's would hook him up great. its not until 450RWHP that they sometimes come loose in 1st gear.

Good points. I dont really drive "normal" in the rain. If you have DRs you need to know to take all corners real slow just incase. I even "pushed" them a little and had no issues. Now if there are "road rivers" in the corners, DRs could bite you. 5000mi sucks, but going fast cost $$. With a stock car its probably not necessary unless you like to hook larger clutch dumps, but the nittos will still be a good improvement over regular radials and less $ and more mi.

i can see someone is saying that he should put 305/35/18 on a 18/10 wheel is that possible im driving on same size rim but i have a 285/35/18 tire on it... i was wondering what sizes are possible to fit on a 18/10 rim..

If you want the best hooking drag radial, you're looking at picking up Mickey Thompsons. Honestly, I'm fine in light rain, and even heavy to a point. Just don't gun it, take corners lightly, and don't jerk the wheel around and you are going to be fine.

I'm on 5,000 miles and with burnouts and the tires are still plenty full of tread life.

Ever think about staying at 17 inch? Cheaper option, and if you want drag radials, it's just a little more human of a size to deal with.

Also, I really don't like Sumitomo either. If you want a daily driving tire that happens to fit our car cheap, go for it. Otherwise, my snow tires hook up better than Sumitomos do. I can't even floor it in first on a roll without the rear end starting to break by the time the IMRC open.

well the set on the back of my car that i use on my street rims have been on 3 cobra's, with a total of over 22K miles, and still have tread left. one of them was a 657RWHP KB car that was always driven hard.

they last very good.

i get my info from experience.

with 370RWHP you really should have a set of stickier tires, street tires just dont do it anymore at that point.

18X10 rims for a 305/35/18 fit perfectly, you can also run a 295/35/18 but it looks a little small IMO, and you could run the BFG 315/30/18 they bulde a little bit more, but they suck in the rain.

305/35/18 nitto DR FTW.

the sumitomo's are scary in the rain, they truely suck all around.

you bring up a good point with the 17's, i just swapped over 2 17's, and i have the new stern replica's, and i have a BUNCH of wheels/tires, here is my wheel/tire setups

1 set of 17X9's with 275/40/17 falken FK452 for the front
1 set of 17X9's with 275/40/17 falken RT-615's for the front road course
1 set of 17X9's used for the rear for slap junk tires on to burn up
1 set of 17X10 with nitto 315/35/17 DR's
1 set of 17X10 with MT 315/35/17 DR's
1 set of 17X10's with hoosier 315/35/17's

12 sets of wheels is a but to keep uo with. lol

then i lso have a set of bogart D10's for the track.

actually i think it is possible... had a friend put about 16K on a set and he raced it several several times. I would imagine for someone who raced a little less, one could get 20K out of one

I'm running the Nitto 315's on my DD and I'm shooting for 15K out of them....

My dad's 99 gt had a set of them and they were trashed after 10k. he never races it ever, but whenever we bring our cars to the track he races, only does a burnout for like 3 seconds too. If i recall, he's made 8 passes on them and thats it.

He kinda needs em though, he's puttin down 415 with a paxton novi 2000.

I guess its just how you drive and how the roads are... cuz around here in indy, they wont last 20k no matter how u drive lol.

I have MT 315/35/17's Dr's the have the new thread pattern similar to nittos. They're actually not that bad in the rain as far as Dr's go. I have done a 1.66 60" with these and a completely stock suspension

I have driven them the rain a few times, once for couple hundred miles, averaging 65 mph.

Pic of new thread pattern
