low oil level ?

ok, I just got an 04 gt and aparently who ever changed the oil last only put 5 quarts insted of 6 in the car, i didn't notice anything out of the ordinary just happened to check it and realized this, atleast the 5 that were there are good and clear car has 50,000 miles. My question to some of you ford guys is did this hurt the motor in any way? or would it have to be lower than that. i plan on changing it today for some mobil 1. Brandon

I doubt there was any damage. I would just check it often for awhile to make sure it's not using oil. Other than that normal cautions such as watching the temp and listening for different noises etc. and you should be fine.

You'll be OK, as long as the car wasn't thrashed around (and I mean REALLY thrashed) continually with only 5 qts...

Someplace along the line is the very late 2001, to early 2002 model years Ford fitted a larger oil pan and the capacity went to 6 qts. I've seen two versions of the 2002 owner's manual, one showing 5 qts, the other 6. The one available from Ford here says 6.

My '03 actually reads a tiny bit low on the dipstick (3/32" or so) with 6 qts.

You'll be fine.

You described the oil that was in there a clean, sounds like it might have been changed just before you bought the car and whoever did it "assumed" 5 qts...

Hmm I did not know that, I new 6 would be way to much, wonder why they did that?

Just ongoing improvement, pretty common in the auto industry. They may have been addressing some real issue, or just looking to pump up the time between changes and add a bit of CYA in the process...

you'll be fine as long as you keep the oil between the lines. if your oil pressure is normal you should be ok. just make sure you don't overfill it.

Exclamation

son of a bitch. Alright well i just changed the oil on the 99 stang and i put 6 quarts in her due to that is what i read all over the net not knowing that ford changed the oil pans some time in 01 or whenever. Ill check it tomorrow when i get up because it is about 10deg and windy out. But im worried now because 1 quart over is no small amount. I have prob put a good 600 miles on her since the change. Possible damage done? Im glad i looked at this tread. Dont get why ford has to change everything all the time. Should of just done it right the first time. Please help
