Gears and horsepower
Stupid question but im being told something and i dont think its right. Do gears affect your final horsepower number or not?

^Any truth to that? Ive always been told they dont affect hp. just how fast you get through the power band basically.

they dont really affect HP, but with a bigger gear, it will read less power, not much though 2-10RWHP typically. you can lose that much though just by it going form say 60 degrees to 70 degrees.

yes taller gear will read slightly less horsepower on an average dyno because its under the assmption of a 1:1 ratio in 4th gear stock. you arent loosing any horsepower though, its just not reading all of it on a dyno. a mustang dyno can be calibrated to know you have different gears and it will read your real number.

^^ exactly, you dont actually lose power, it just reads a little less, and not much at all.
gears are definently one of the best single mods you can do

Gearing, tire type and roller position can manipulate chassis dyno numbers. Big deal. Chassis dynos are tuning devices at best. Real horsepower is measured at the flywheel.

its nice to have a high dyno number, but it isnt everything, how it puts it to the ground, suspension setup, and driver skill is. dyno numbers are for bench racers IMO. if you want high numbers, get a big 28" tall tire, and air it up like crazy, get smaller gears, fill the radiator with water only, use thinner oil, hose down the IC, and/or radiator with nitrous, put a fan blowing air right over the intake, and go to the dyno on a 50-60 degree day with no humidity, at a place close to sea level. if you want to go fast, get bigger gears, the properly sized tire, and run.
