CAI vs Stock Intake and Gears Question

What is the "silencer" on the intake system? To me the stock tube looks to be just as good as a CAI one. If there is a way to modify my stock one (2002 GT stock) then can you tell me what it is. Also, obviously I am a novice. I am looking at getting an exhaust upgrade and everyone has been saying get new gears. Can someone please explain the gear concept and what it will do for me? Thanks for the help.

if are dead set on the CAI get the jlt CAI. other than that i wouldnt waste your money. gears are the best bang for the buck inho. if you want to do an intake mod, do the TB and plenum. this will let you rev your motor to 6000

cant go wrong with the k&n. thats what i would do. we dataloged my car with the jlt cai before we put the blower on. iat shows very little difference in temps, and i picked up some hp(with 75mm accufab tb and plenum) the mac cai had very hot air temps
