Serious Engine/Computer Problem

Hey y'all I was referred to you guys for some technical help regarding my 2003 GT.

Here goes...

I was driving down the freeway yesterday testing out my new 3.73's. I dropped her into 3rd and punched it, and got ready to shift near redline (you know the drill). Apparently I let the rpm's reach the rev limiter, and instead of the engine doing what it always does upon reaching the limiter (bouncing off of it), the engine just popped and DIED.

After having a mild heart attack and thinking I blew my engine, I pulled off to the emergency lane and let it sit for a minute. Then I cranked her, and after a few seconds it started back up, no problem. I proceeded to drive off, taking it easy, and then after it seemed to run fine I hit the gas a few times to see if the power was still there, and it was. She seemed to be running perfectly.

Anyway, today, thinking something is sill wrong, and knowing that that had happened for a reason, I decided to reproduce the problem (don't ask...). Anyway the same thing happened again, the engine popped a couple times and died upon hitting the rev limiter. I pulled off, and tried cranking it again, and this time, although it was turning over with no problems, it wouldn't fire.

So that's my current situation. The car is sitting a few miles away from here in a parking lot. All I could think of for now is to reset the computer, so I unplugged the battery, and I'm about to go try to start it again.

So has anyone ever heard of this happening? What would cause the engine to die instead of just having the fuel intermittently shut off (i.e. bouncing off the rev limiter)? I hope to God I didn't destroy anything, My eye was on the tach both times, and the rpm's never climbed into the redline, so I'm assuming you can't really hurt anything...right?

The car only has a few basic bolt-ons, by the way.

I know this was a long read but I am in a very serious situation. I came down to Houston for the weekend and am supposed to be back at work tomorrow morning in Austin...poor college kids can't really afford to buy new/rebuild engines...talk about screwed!!

Thanks for your time and help!

Jake

P.S. I did try resetting the fuel shut off switch in the trunk.
