Does anyone have any recommendations for a laptop based tuner for my 2000 GT? Looking for something that will allow me to tune the car on my own, and also that is reputable and doesn't completely break the bank. I appreciate any feedback on the subject.
I believe for what you are wanting to do, assuming you mean also using the laptop to connect to the car rather than a stand alone handheld, you will want to go with something like HPTuners. I am sure some of the self tuners will chime in though.
That's correct. I am looking to connect to my car through a laptop and not with a handheld unit. I took a look at HPTuners website, and it seems like they do not support my 2000 GT.
Why are you wanting to tune purely based on the laptop? For convenience it would be easier to do an SCT tune, and load via handheld, because the handheld powers from the OBDII port, so you can change the tune on a road trip etc. even if you don't have your laptop or its battery is dead, etc.
Again, there are guys here who have tuned their own stuff, so hopefully they can chime in. You will also undoubtedly want a wideband O2 sensor for tuning purposes.
Sneaky98, what are you able to change/control with the SCT Pro Racer? does the kit come with everything that you need to tune your car, or do you need to buy add-ons?
Pretty much everything. There are no pay-for add-ons that I'm aware of with the SCT stuff. The $300 (or $350, or whatever it is these days) software will allow you to tune one ECU. If you want to tune an additional ECU of a car that you own, it used to be another $100 with proof of ownership. But if you're just looking to do 1 car of your own, the software and a programmer are all you need.
You can control just about everything with it. There might be some parameters that a dealer has access to that I don't, but I've never needed anything that wasn't there. The only exception I can think of regarding this is the newer cars that are throttle-by-wire. I think SCT limits access to those parameters to just dealers, for liability reasons. Frankly, I completely understand that. If some Joe gets his hands on those parameters, and, not knowing what he's doing, causes a "sudden unintended acceleration" event, lawsuits would fly left-and-right. Just ask Toyota.
Bottom line, the SCT PRP software will let you do pretty much anything needed to fully tune a stock ECU.
I'm using a Toshiba Satellite with a i7 processor. A little pricey but andy laptop with an i5 processor or equivalent should do the job well.
