Forged Internals

This might be a stupid question but everything that i read everybody says that if you are going to be putting out a lot of power you should get forged internals. What exactly are forged internals, like what parts? And then wouldnt it be smart to do all of this before all of your other upgrades? and about how much do you think it would cost?

crank, rods, pistons. the factory pistons and rods are cracked metal(hypereutectic pistons) and they are weak. well if you plan on making a shit ton of power, its better to have a storkger base to work from in the beginning than building up the weak one only to blow it and cost a lot more moeny

Spoken like the voice of experience.

The hyperpathetic pistons and rods are used to save weight and money. Under normal circumstances they will last well over 100,000 miles. However, most of the folks on here don't use them under normal circumstances. FI or too much N2O = living on borrowed time.

So what would the labor cost to have forged internals installed?

The weak link is the rods and pistons, the crank - although not forged - is extremely strong and a forged unit isn't necessary (although many people do it anyways). Throw some forged h-beam rods and forged pistons in there, balance it all, and it should be good for some serious horsepower. As far as cost... it'll probably be in the range of $1500ish plus parts to cover the machine work, R&R the engine, and building the engine. Out the door expect at least $5k.

I'm forging my shortblock etc. now. With parts and machine work it's costing about $4k, though I was pretty thrifty with my stuff and I don't pay labor. By the time you add in all the little necessities:

oil pump $200
oil pan $200
rods $600
pistons $500
rings $50
bearings $100
head studs $100
gaskets $400
timing chain $75
cams $600
springs $200
clutch $300
quadrant kit $75

Just that is $3,400 and I know I'm forgetting some stuff.

Guys do just throw juice on them and go but thats a lil risky with stock internals. A lower shot 50-100hp is usually okay but anything more puts a serious strain on the internals.

Heres my take on what things approx. run.

Cams & valve springs $600.-$750.
Ported Stage II heads $1200.-$2000.
Built short block w/forged internals $2800.-$3800.
Automatics-stall converter $600.-$800.
headers and exhaust $1000.-$1700.
A Professional "REAL TUNE" $250. + Chip $300.
The ability to bolt it all together PRICELESS :award

so it would probably be smarter to do all of those kind of things before i go for big upgrades. Do like rods pistons, stuff like that first?

it would be cheaper and a lot easier to just buy a built shortblock, form say dss, vt, or chp, livernoise, and then have your stock heads ported and buy your cams. then sell your stock shortblock to someone who blew the shit out of theirs.

so you think that i should buy a new engine and then sell my stock cobra engine? How many people would buy a stock 2001 cobra engine? How much do you think it would sell for? And what does everybody think about the aftermarker roush engines?

no keep the stock cobra engine its good. just P&P the heads, replace the rods and pistons and mabye the crank and you'll be fine. the cobra engine is pretty durable. How much Hp you plan on runnin?

well i think that i would be happy with about 500. is that stupid to say, i guess everybody should be happy with 500. Whatever it takes to run mid to low 11's, thats what i want. What do i need to do to get those kind of times besides drive good. o yea, what would it take to beat a C6, or is that just hopes and dreams?

a c6 zo6?
maybe in an 1/8 you can take him or if you run mid or low 11's you'll take the new C6 Z06 stock for sure. idk if u can do it with 500hp tho

i'd think u'd need about 550 600hp to make low 11's

you can have all the power in the world and if you cant get it to the ground it aint gonna do ya any good.you should be able to run in the 11s with 400 hp if you got a decent suspension set up. and with that you should smoke a lot of c6s unless of course they got some mods.i think they run mid 12s mostly stock

no way that new C^ Z06 is running high 11's bone stock....11.8-11.9 and its got 505hp

ive never heard of 400hp running low or mid 11s or even 11's
the GT-500 has 500hp and wont do 11's
the 03/04 run 360hp i believe and pull mid 12's
i dont see 400hp hitting 11's...it might be possible but i dont see it in a mustang without some good wieght reduction

if your talkin bout the z06 to beat that you need to run mid to low 11s and the z06 has to be bone stock...they can run 11.8 stock with a good driver. add some drag radials and some bolt ons and thats one fast car

if you can beat the C6 Z06 you've got a beast on your hands, but on the track with curves and bends...most likely you dont have a chance in hell
