Port & Polish

If i was looking to port and polish my engine, what does that mean i have to buy first? Like, do i need to buy anything that they would need to put on there after they have done it for me?

What you are referring to is porting and polishing your heads. That means that your intake and exhaust runners will be machined or ground to open them up- giving you more flow potential. Next, the ports will be smoothed (polished) to assure protection from air turbulence in your runners. You could also opt to have larger valves put in your heads. Again, porting/polishing refers to your heads only- which, by the way, is the basis for a strong engine build. You would probably want to get bigger cams (more lift and/or duration) to really notice a big difference.

So cams is the only thing that i should buy. How do i pick out the right ones? I wont need anything else? And what is the difference between port and plish and boring out? Which one is better, or both?

Cams are just one more thing to think about. You can get cold air induction, a bigger throttle body, upper plenum, new intake--- the list goes on and on. You can go anywhere from wild to mild.
"Boring out a motor" refers to machining the cylinder walls. You need to bore a block when it becomes worn beyond the piston rings limits to adequately seal the combustion chamber from the crankcase. Boring really doesn't do much for you unless your cylinders are worn. You will only pick up a few cubic inches from boring. You have to increase your stroke ("stroke your motor") to see real cubic inch gains.
You should probably get up with a local engine shop and discuss some of these questions. Seeing real parts and processes could greatly increase your knowledge and understanding. At the same time, you would learn more about the direction you want to head with your own motor build.

dude you need to buy some muscle mustangs and fast fords magazines, read up and then talk to a good mustang performance shop and just say i want to make hp by with this much money. Cause dude you can NOT port and polish an engine. You can bore it out and stroke it. You can port and polish heads or just buy ones that are already ported. Go to google and search for VT mustang engines. Go to that website and have a ball. Everything they have is high quality.

Not cool man..... Everyone's not a gearhead or was raised by people who were interested in high performance cars. Don't dog him because he doesn't have the knowledge that you do about a particular subject.

Some people might tell me that its not cool to state my mind. But I personally, and I know a lot of people don't agree with me, but I know I might be speaking for a few people also. Thats why I am just stating an opinion. I only see maybe 30-35 dedicated members that I see posting on this site a lot. All the rest of the 2500 members are people who sign up to ask some stupid shit they are afraid to ask on another forum because most of them have less than 20 posts. Just look at the last 4-5 pages of the latest posts and look at the majority of the newbie questions and how many posts the members have. I.E. what gears, CAI, and can my stock GT beat this car with this many mods.

I'm not trying to down grade your right to "speak your mind", but you get dedicated members by treating people who come here with respect. That is one reason I signed up and stuck around here. I asked some questions on another forum that are apparently common knowledge to most Mustang owners and I got some smartass answers. I know a good bit about engines and setting up a car. However, I have bought and driven Camaros and Firebirds for the past ten years, so there is a bit of a learning curve with this Mustang for me. I have ben treated with respect on all the questions I have asked so far, and I wil continue to hang around.
See, you can help make dedicated members...

I agree with sonicblue. I'm fairly new myself to this forum, but I'm on quite a few others out there and there are a lot of people on all of them that will be willing to steer you in the right direction or offer a lending hand. Don't let one @$$hole scare you off, because they think they know it all or they expect everybody to know what they do. The only way you are going to learn is by asking questions or reading different forums, magazines, or internet car sites. If you have any questions you can ask me my opinions and if I don't know I'll help you find out what you want to know.

ok lets get this topic back on track. porting and polishing your heads is better don by hand than on a cnc machine. lots more power to be made. screemin302, you know i like you but that was a little too much.

Look under the topic "HP potential for a stock 2V", and read the paragraph about hand porting vs. cnc porting- very informative.

Hand porting is always better...

CNC is ok...My heads are going to be CNC'ed...But if I had the choice they would be hand ported...

A good hand porting can run 1200+...That is what I am told...
