tire sizes

ive been reading that if you go with a taller tire it will add more to your gears i have 4.10s and i love them but i wouldnt mind getting my rpms alittle lower. so tire height would be the 245- number right? and 45 is width right? or is it the other way around? so what size would i need to get more gear back?

you are correct.

245 is the width and the 45 is the sidewall in percentage of the width.

Tire Sizing Formula
size - width in inches
185 - 7.2"
195 - 7.6"
205 - 8.0"
215 - 8.4"
225 - 8.8" width X aspect ratio X two + wheel diameter = height
235 - 9.2"
245 - 9.6"
255 - 10.0"
265 - 10.4"
275 - 10.8"
285 - 11.2"
295 - 11.6"
305 - 12.00"
315 - 12.40"
325 - 12.80"
345 - 13.58"
355 - 13.98
365 - 14.37"

here's a tire size chart that can give you dimensions for most all tires in inches

for instance a 275-40-17 find 275 which is 10.8" wide... multiply that times the aspect ratio which in this case is .40 (always put a point in front) which gives you a sidewall size of 4.32" multiply that times 2 (sidewall top & bottom) which gives you a total sidewall size of 8.64 then add the rim diameter which is 17" for a total height of 25.64" so a 275-40-17 would be 10.8 inches wide & 25.64 inches tall ( some brands of tires vary a bit but this formula is very close)

here's a link given to me by dude496 ... PaladinMicro
it will also help with tire sizes compared to rpm's & speed for mustang 5 speed trans
also on the nitto tire site is shows approved rim widths for a 305-35-18 to be 10.0 to 12.0 with suggested rim width to be 11.0 so I'd say a 10" rim would be fine

i run 245/45/zr18........i would like to run 275 or so/45/zr18 next time around or something like that. I cant wait to replace my rims so that i can get some good looking ones and 17". Tires are about $75 cheaper a tire.
