Good write up.

A hydraulic trans jack can be rented fairly cheaply and would have made reinstalling the transmission much easier. Also it helps to have the trans in gear and turn the output shaft to get the splines to engage.

update:

the spec clutch was GARBAGE. i had to pull it out re-do everything. i got a fidanza 2.1 and put it in and it is awesome. a couple things i think are important to add after doing it again:

when you tighten the pressure plate down, torque all the bolts twice, in a criss cross pattern and don't tighten them all down all the way the first time around. also, when you clean the pressure plate, clutch disc, and flywheel, clean them before you put them in and also as you're about to mount them because grease from your hands can get on them when you're moving them around under your car. use break cleaner, i was told that if you use acetone it may not take all the cosmalene off the parts

i realized i had a trans jack yesterday when i was doing the project. as i was laying under my car i looked under the work bench and there it was, just sitting there never used. lol i felt like an idiot. i used it this time and it made it a little easier. still a pain though.

another edit: my pressure plate bolts came loose after about 500 miles. make sure you use a lot of loc-tite on your pressure plate bolts.

I am in the middle of doing this right now, let me tell you its a project! BUT i found some little things that help,

the splining tool is great, but it kinda sucks that its plastic, i put it in, and pushed up on it a little bit and it made things easier,

i had a snag where the tranny and engine weren't o the same angle so i pushed on the Alternater, (lightly!!!!) and i could hear everything fall into place.

Sorry this isnt in order, im going off memory and its 7am on a sunday... But jacking, i used car ramps on the front wheels, but the concrete floor im working on wouldnt allow me to drive up them, jack up the car, place a jack stand, jack up the other side put in a car ramp, and go back to the first side jack and install second ramp. Its easy and it give a nice stable platform to work with. In the rear i jacked it up about 19 inches, put some heavy duty stands, and as a safety stacked wood, 10 x 10s up to the chassis jack point, i dont entrust my life to jack stands if i can help it.

The starter removal was a nightmare, it took 3 of us taking turns to fine the right angles to get the bolts out, i wouldnt normally admit this, BUT i want other people to learn from our mishaps and plan accordingly!

The other nightmare was the pilot bearing, this cost us a LONG time. It wouldnt come out, even using the bearing remover, (the tool with the prongs at one end, screw the handle and the prongs come out, and use the slide to hammer it out) eventually my friend, used a torch and heated it lightly, when that didnt work he used a pnuematic cutter of some sort, when i find out what its called i will edit this post, burred out the sides a little bit and out she came, he was careful not to burrow through into the crankshaft!

I can say this, without a torch and an airgun this project would have laste more than 3 days. Things nice and rusted, the airgun helped out a lot. As i think of anything else ill through it in here, good or bad so i can try and be as helpful as i can. Meanwhile, I thank Bob, you can bet i printed off his directions and they are being used as a guide, im swapping transmissions ( 5 speed for a 5 speed), Aluminum FW, Spec Stage 1 Clutch and Steeda Adjustable cable kit. Bob, your write up is amazing, and +Rep for you!!!!!!

i replaced mine a few months ago and i did it at a friends house since he had a lift, it took three people to get it out we had to push the headers apart just a little and then we could turn it so it came out. when we put it back in i had a transmission jack to help hold the load since it takes a few minutes to get it turned right but then it just slides in

Great write up. I've never heard of replacing the pilot bearing while you're in there, just the throw out bearing. I have 21k miles on my Bullitt I don't think I need to replace it.

I wish the stupid faggots at the nissan dealership would have replaced the throwout bearing when they replaced my clutch because that's been the problem all along. Grrrrr I'm angry
