I Have the same problem for some time now and it has gotten worse over time i have read some articals about bearing life and how oil escaping the bearings and pump during time that the engine is off sounds like worn out bearings to me

after sitting for a few days, it could be rockers or just dry parts in the top end...that is much more common with a pushrod motor but still possible with us. and i agree that oil psi should be up almost instant

I thnk my car might be having some sort of detonation problem- when I have the rpms low (around a grand) and get on it in fifth, it starts sounding like that- like a diesel, and ugly as hell. I'm due for an oil change, so it might be something in the valvetrain- I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread.

You should use the LW to back out 2-4* timing in the low load region. NEVER let it detonate!!!!! Also lugging 5th at such low rpms is not a good thing to do. Just downshift.
