About My 4.10 Gears, Couple Questions
In an earlier thread someone explained to me sorta how gears work. I don't really fully understand, or forgot how, can someone give me a refresher? Something about the drive shaft turns 4.10 times for every 1 turn of the wheel?
Another question I wanted to ask is: why do they help acceleration? I know it gets the car into the powerband quicker, but it doesn't stay there long, and I have to shift right away out of 1st. From a dig, I have a hardtime even beating some of my friends in their old school pathfinders and non-muscle cars just since I have to shift so quick I'll lose em. For other people with 4.10's, how do you feel about them? I feel like it makes me slower in fact. I haven't experienced stock gears since I bought the car this way, but how would those feel?

I'm running 4.30's in my Mach and I love every bit of it. Maybe practice on your launches some. Also, you said you had to shift really quick and the car doesn't stay in the power band very long, so what RPM are you shifting at?

Gears ae not going to give you more power...They are going to change the way that power is applied...When you switch from the stock 3.27 gears and move into a set of 3.73s or 4.10's you are going to feel alot more of the power of the drivetrain then you did before...It helps you get into the powerband faster...
Gears jobs in the rear-end are to multiply the power coming through the driveshaft. So if you have a lower gear (3.73 or above IMO) the power is going to get to the groud quicker...With a highway gear (below 3.27 IMO) your car is not going to multiply the power as quick as you would with a low gear and thus you wont get power to the ground as fast as the lower gear would... But with a low gear you lose top-end...On most street cars the loss of the top end is really no big deal...A couple extra hundred RPM at highway speeds...But with cars with poweradders which make a bigger powerband the gears should be matched to it... |
