Check Engine Light On '01 GT

My 2001 GT has about 101,000 miles on it. I bought it at 83,000 and this is the first problem I've had with it. I don't have a diagnostic machine so maybe someone could help...It went on last night when I was driving on the highway, I had the heat on low which is something I don't usually do. The cooling belt and pulleys are fine, the car is running, driving, idling and shifting perfectly...all the guages read fine, the oil was just changed, the only unusual noise from the car is a high-pitched whine at the low-end of each gear...which I thought was wear on the clutch. I'm taking it over to be checked tomorrow but if anyone has any idea what it might be please let me know. Thanks for any help. Greg

if the car seems to be operating normally, everyone on this site could guess what it is and I would be amazed if someone guessed right. There are a numerous amount of codes on every vehicle.

Take it to autozone or any auto part store and have them read it. They will do it for free usually. It could be a million different things, so just get it narrowed down so you don't have to worry about it.

if youre not having performance issues its prob nothing serious. maybe evap or 02's. Although 02's can cause problems. Let us know before you spend money on getting it fixed.

Thanks to all you guys for the replies, bear with me I'm getting it checked out Monday...work getting in the way popped the hood everything looks fine on the outside, my 96 GT did this a hundred times because of a faulty trigger..only once because of a misfiring cylinder. Regardless I'm taking it easy on the engine until Monday, I'll get back to you guys with the diagnostic code they come up with, would'nt be surprised if its' another false alarm...Thanks. Greg. Love the avatar drgnracin72 thats my favorite video.

The computer detected an emissions problem because the lip of the fuel tank tube is cracked. Theres' actually no vapors or fuel leaking but it was enough to turn the light on. I'm guessing it was because of the gas nozels at my local Exxon..which you have to jam in to get working. Anyway, they turned the light off for me but even if it goes on again I know I'm not doing any damage to the engine, so I can wait a week or two before fixing it. Thanks again.

Back On Again...

Last night on the way to work the light went back on again. I have'nt found the time to take it over to Ford but Im gonna be taking the next weekend to do some basic maintenance like replacing headlight bulbs and cleaning the air intake not to mention finally painting the rocker molding (I decided to just forgo the sanding and paint reducer and just apply the factory basecoat and clearcoat over the original black base and clear)...Exxon told me the light was from a sensor related to a cracked gasket in the fuel shaft (from those stupid gas pumps). I know I have to have a diagnostic machine turn the light off but I wanted to know if this cracked ring on the top of the fuel shaft can be replaced easily or if I'll have to take it over to Ford. They said theres' no actual emissions leak but I have to get rid of that light, I feel like Im chasing a bright yellow light in the sky when I drive at night...To explain it better, if I open the fuel door...that little ring around the fuel tube? Its cracked. Thanks for any help. Greg

autozone "rents" code readers out. you only need to come up with a 169 dollar deposit which is fully refundable. read your codes and rite them down,.. when you return the reader give them your codes and they will tell you what they mean

This is quite a delayed reaction...But since its been dug up, yeah the code is gone..turns out the mechanic that told me it was related to an emissions leak from a crack in the fuel filler pipe was garbage...it was actually related to the CAI that I had recently cleaned and connected loosely...Once I tightened it, the light went off and the car actually passed inspection...hasnt come back since. Good thing too, I wasnt really looking foward to messing with that gas tank to replace the filler pipe assembly. I actually need a new CAI, Im sure if I let this one go into another winter, the computer :sleep will start throwing codes again.

If your getting a new CAI, then look no further than the JLT CAI.
