problems starting sometimes

i was just wandering if this is happening to any one else its an 03 gt some times when i turn the key it crans over for a few seconds before it fires up and it sounds like its not getting fuel if i release the key before it fires up then try to start it right away it takes even longer to light off i did a full tune up fuel filter and it only does it once in a while when its hot there are no codes it runs great just every 10 or so days it does that i some one said i might have a vapor lock has any one ever heard of that but none of my other mustangs ever did that

Try holding your foot on the gas next time and see if it starts it it does it could be you IAC. But if you crank it over and you let off the key too soon it could cause it to crank longer its a value strategy in the pcm, Ford says to crank in upwards of 8 secs or so before it could start

if you jump in and turn the key without giving the fuel pump time to prime, that happens

My '03 GT has done this since I have owned it (I got it at 30k miles, 73k now). When it's hot and has been sropped for just a short time--like running into the store for a 6-pack.

All cars have certain quirks, and in the 1-1/2 years I've had the car it has done this maybe a dozen times; waiting just a couple seconds between key ON and Start does seem to minimise the problem.

I HAD the same problem with my 02GT. When hot, (the car that is), it would fail to start prob every other time. Cranking it a second time, always got it going. Since I had it worked on a year ago, it hasnt done it once.

I had the following service recommended to me:
BG Findashop - Fuel/Air Induction Service

In hindsight, I would have tried seafoaming the crap out of the car first, as this service cost me like $140. However I cant argue with the results. it fixed it, pure and simple. Dont know if seafoam would work as well, but I would have tried it first if I had known about it back then.

Here is what the mechanic told me. When carbon builds up inside the engine, it acts like a sponge for fuel. When you shut the car off, the gas seeps out of the carbon and into the cylinders causing a flooding condition upon hot restart. If you give the car enough time to cool down, you also give the gas enough time to exit the cylinders by itself, therefore avoiding the flooding condition.

Call bullsh1t if you want, but it fixed my car perfectly, and I couldnt be happier.

The problem you are discribing is Vapor Lock. Since the injectors are firing and the spark plugs sparking, the computer will not put out a code for the problem. Some (maybe most) of the 2001 Bullitts are affected by this problem because of the aluminum intake and the heat they retain, especially on quick stops. To prevent the problem, turn the key on, buckle your seat belt, then start. Should fire every time.
