Improve Performance on my Stang

Hey Guys -

I recently installed the motor back in my 2000 Roush Stage 2. I had the motor rebuilt with all forged internals to increase the boost of the vortech. Im now running a vortech s-trim with 10-12 lbs of boost, pulley(not intercooled). I also installed some BBK ceramic headers, a pro 5.0 shifter, and 30lbs fuel injectors. Im looking to get better low end performace to match the excellent top end provided by the supercharger. I currently have the roush exhaust, that came stock on the Stage II(with cats), I beleive its borla. What would the best bang for the buck to get increased low end perf. and get me into 12 second 1/4 mile times with my setup? The roush suspension is also adjustable, and I would like some advice on the best way to adjust this for running the 1/4 mile. Ive also heard great things about MSD ignitions.. Thanks for any advice on this!~

You ran forged internals to only push 12lbs of boost?

Well its easy enough to swap out the pulley, and doesnt hurt to have forged, if i decide to up the boost in the future. Its still a bit sluggish off the jump though. Do you think cutting the cats or opening up the exhaust to 3" would help on the low end?

Dude with 12lbs of boost you should already be in the 12's, you probably just need to learn how to drive the car, tune the suspension right and get some nice tires, but definitely up the boost I hit 12 lbs of boost on hard runs and I have stock internals, since you have forged you might as well use them.

I would definitely drop the Borla exhaust and cats that came on the car initially. Borla, in my experience, is a quality exhaust - but it's nothing more than a higher quality stock exhaust. I'd get yourself some bigger piping to free up some backpressure, especially with that blower. And, of course, up that boost!

My best time prior to all these enhancements was 14.46 at 102 mph... this is of course at 6000 ft, Bandimere. And was with the 4-6 lbs pulley, but stock internals. Maybe I need some tips on how to launch the thing, I get excessive wheel spin usually through first gear.

If I understand correctly, you were running non-intercooled 4-6 lbs of boost with 30 lb injectors. You're now up to 12 lbs non-intercooled and still running 30 lb injectors. I'm running 8 lbs intercooled with 42 lb injectors. Are you sure your injectors are large enough for your setup?

some gears could help the low end if you dont already have some

Well before you go adding more power...you really need to focus on your suspension and maybe some racing schools...even at higher altitude you should be getting better times then that.

Also I personally would not run anything more than 10 psi (and thats really pushing it) without an intercooler or aftercooler. You can pick up a set of used 42# injectors and larger MAF for around $250.

+1 on the intercooler b/c its better for your pistons. and you can run more boost. and you need bigger injectors

Thanks for your responses. Im gonna take your advice and go with some 42# or larger injectors, also im gonna look at replacing the MAF, and eliminating the cats...

As for the intercooler, is it better to run air-to-air or air-to-water, and can i get a setup for the 2000 style, that bolts on in front of the radiator? Ive only taken the car down the strip a total of 3 times... thanks again for your help!

It has a lot more to do than just being safer on a motor....plus his car is forged so it can handle some abuse. The reason you need a cooler is because of the heat generated by the supercharger...you need to cool down and further condense that air to make the most use out of it. 8 PSI its not really necessary for a cooler, but even at that low boost still recommended. Once you start pushing 10+ you really need to get that air cooled down

12s at this altitude 5800 FT where i run and he runs is not easy. But you should be able to do 12s with a full suspension and 450 RWHP. I would get 42# injectors too. And turn up the boost, but mainly redo your suspension and get some sticky tires...

Spray a 75 shot through the MAF. That should wake the car up....

opening up the exhaust would make you lose some low end power. the best thing for a low end kick would be gears and for your car id say 3.73s

I have heard it was better to run an air to air intercooler

Im running the Manley Forged 11cc Dish Piston .020 Over, $578 for the set... The Eagle H-Beam connection rods - $545 EAGCRS5933F3D for the set. The heads where ported and polished, the flywheel balanced, and crankshaft was honed. I went with Geddes Auto Machine shop out of colorado springs, to do the work... The first time I put the motor back in.. it was losing compression on the 1, 3, 4 and 8 cylinders, so I had to re-pull the motor, and they rebuilt it... This time around everything seems to be up to par, ive only had it back in since Saturday though.. Now Im looking for ways to protect my investment in this motor(intercooler and injectors seem top priority).
