About Lowering Spring Installation

I've had these springs sitting in my garage for over a year because I'm too afraid to try and install them myself but refuse to pay a mechanic an insane labor charge to do it for me. They're Steeda springs for the 99-04 GT...one source told me to use a motorized spring compressor, another told me to unbolt the shock from inside the hood after jacking the car up, then ease the lower control arm down (guiding the shock clear of the fender) until I can pry it out. I don't have seven hands, only one brain...I figure if I was going to do it without a spring compressor...could'nt I just support the front of the car with the jack, leave the wheel and rotor assembly on and unbolt the shock from the lower control arm...jacking the car UP until theres enough room to get the spring out? I think some people eggagerate (I don't know how to spell and don't care)....How much pressure are these damn front springs REALLY under? Any other tips because I'm getting close to just throwing the springs away. Thanks a lot...Greg

you don't need a spring compressor, but reading something like this may help you understand it

That's a good article 99Mustang. Might also want to look at the how to article in Mustangworld. I installed mine along with new shocks/struts and camber/caster plates in about 3 hours. It helps to have a buddy there but it is not difficult. As long as you have a good jack, axle stands and basic hand tools, it is a straightforward install. I would rate it a 6 out of 10 in difficulty. Check out the how to's and ask questions if you have any then go for it.

I was worried as well when I did my install. You can do it with ease. I did my front end complete inside of 2 hours with no problem at all.

Good luck,
Troy

Ok Thanks!

Thanks for the article, its' exactly the same procedure as I read in another article..so I guess this is the most common way to do it. Should I take the car to get a four-wheel alignment right away? I'm gonna upgrade the front rotors also so since I'll have the car up and rotors off I might as well get everything done at once. Thanks, I'll let you know how it turns out. Greg

yes you should get an alignment but i't doesn't need to be 4wheel, only two, unless you have AWD. might want to review how to change the caster/camber settings, because most alignment shops aren't that familar with c/c plates and you don't want old bubbachuck experimenting to try and figure it out on yours.

Auto Zone rents the spring compressors, I would suggest getting it, makes the job easier and quicker.

be very careful using the spring compressor on the front cuz you can or i could only get it (spring compressor) on one side and it could let loose on ya. i had to step on the a-arm and put grease on the spring boot to be able to get the new spring in.

I installed my eibach pro kit in about an hour. Using a lift but a set of jack stands is just as good for this.
Personally I took the balljoint loose from the spindle ( then replaced balljoint at the same time, thought I would kill 2 birds with one stone). Then just positioned the brake assembly and strut out of the way. The spring isnt gonna just jump out at you. Ya have to pull that damn control arm WAYYYY down to get the spring out.

Rear unbolted 1 nut on each quad shock, and lower bolts on rear shocks
jacked up right side of rear axle pulled opposite side spring out. the viseversa!
