Idling Problems

Hey guys I have a 02 Mustang GT, and the other day I was jump starting another car, with some jumper cables, so I connected everything correctly and the other car started, but then when I disconnected the cable from the other car I accidentally made contact with both cables, and sparks flew. In other word I made a short. All of this happened while the mustang was still connected and the car being on. Then all off the sudden I heard that my car was sounding louder than usual like if I was hitting the gas, but I wasn't. I looked at the RMP gauge and it was at 1 RPM instead of it being at the half RPM that it's suppose to be at when parked. Why is it idling weird? plz help What did I do? Did I mess up the computer?

there's all types of shit you could have fried. but if it's any sensor it should throw a code. tps wouldn't have to do with idle...check your IACV and clean that and check vacuum lines just in case

Disconnect the battery for 5-7 minutes, the EMI/RFI glitch from the short could have scrambled the KAM (Keep Alive Memory] where all learned parameters (such as idle air trim, short and long term fuel trims, etc.) are stored. Disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes or more resets this memory and forces the PCM to relearn these values.

The TPS has no active electronics (it's just a potentiometer) and is only connected to the PCM and ground. It is highly unlikely that shorting the battery damaged the TPS without taking out the PCM too. Same is true for the IAC.

In the last--when using jumper cables; connect both positive cables first then both grounds (battery to be jumped last). In this way there is no common ground between the vehicles until the last ground is connected...

When disconnecting do the both grounds first, then the positives. This removes the common ground first. It would also have prevented your faux pas...

I wouldn't worry. Many times the car will set a high idle just after the ECU is reset (dead battery). Give it a day or 2 and it should go away.
