help with ticking sound
Hey guys I was wondering if I could get some help. I have a ticking sound coming from my engine. It sounds like its coming from the top driver side, i'm getting decently scared that it might be a spun rod bearing? I was searching this and saw that a few others had it as well. Im trying to upload a video I took with my camera so you can hear it. I mite as well add is it drives perfectly fine so please help haha.

My car was doing the same thing in the same place. But mine was a broken/worn timing chain guides. See from Ford the tensioner is of a harder metal than the guide(aluminum), so when the tensioner hit the guide it made an imprint in the guide allowing the guide not to move and therefore the tensioner would not place tension on the chain allowing the chain to slap around(Ticking sound). If you place a hose about 1" or so in diameter around the motor while it is running and listen to the tick if it is what I think it is it will probablly be loudest arund the top of the timing chain cover or valve cover. I had the same problem with my car. If you don't get it fixed quick the chain will end up eating a hole in you oil pump. Mine was also coming from the front drivers side. When you buy a timing chain kit you might want to go to Ford, b/c I went through two and then Ford makes an aftermarket tensioner for the left side if Im not misstaken. Its plastic by the way.

Just thro an idea out there but is there a way that its your TOB. Does the sound stop when you push in the clutch. Mine gets kinda loud.

its not the throw out. I read about that as well and the sound is still there when I have the clutch engaged/disengaged. the sound is most noticable around 1k-2k rpm, although i think the only reason is cuz my exhaust gets a tad loud above that.

If you try a higher gear, say 5th, while driving like 50 MPH, then give it some gas, does it make that sound only slower?

You could take off your drivers side valve cover to see how loose the chain is by pulling on it and compare it to the other side thats what I did other than that just take off the front timing chain cover to see if there is any damage. See on my car the chain had worn through the phenolic peice on the guide and was riding on the tensioner and was starting to ware away the tensioner and chain, which if the chain breaks you could guess what happens.

Ticking noises from the top of the engine typically are indicative of a problem up top. Even a bad injector can tick fairly loudly. A spun rod bearing or main bearing would make a louder, deeper noise from the bottom of the engine.
