Ride quality difference between GT and Cobra

Hey there,

The boy's GT rides about like the 6'er. Which isn't to say it handles the same, just has the same bounce and shimmy over imperfections that the 6'er has.

How much different is the ride quality of the IRS Cobra's? Do you still get an ass pounding, or did they manage to take out most of the shake, rattle and roll?

I'll assume again that stiffening the chasis is a priority on any of the cars, and subframes and lowering would be in order. But if the ride is still bad, then I may need to re-think this entire M3 killer scenario.

We hit holes in the road (not huge holes, but dips) and the entire car will bang and rattle. Just like the 6'er. The GT certainly does handle much better, but I'm not a huge fan of listening to all the plastic pieces work their way loose over every bump.

For example, my CTS (a different breed of car for sure, but IRS enabled) handles most road imperfections without any twitchery at all. It takes an extraordinarily large hole to make that suspension come unglued.

Which is kind of what I'm hoping for with the Cobra. I don't mind 'stiff', as long as it's not 'painful'.

It's so nice to get pertinent information.

Really, am I in a 'sports car'? I suppose next you'll be telling me that it has a solid rear axle......

So ok, we've established what I'm driving, now is the Cobra set up for a more forgiving ride ala cars that have SLA fronts and IRS rears, or does it bang around like a delivery van? Cause I'm assuming the reason they gave it the IRS is to make it more roadworthy and less of a straight line performance car. If that's the case, the question remains did they (Ford) get the car to both take a turn and a pothole, or just take a turn?

And, Dude, the CTS IS a sports sedan. With a change of shocks, larger tires and strut tower brace (and 400hp ) it turned in a 8:19 on the ring. The architecture between the CTS and the CTS-V is very similar, right down the the rear end. And further, the 3.6l will put down as much RWHP as the 4.8l 2V in the GT, un modded. The CTS just gives away a few too many pounds to compete off the line.

Understood.

And what I'm asking is the diff between the GT and the Cobra. I assume the suspension change was done for a reason, and I'm hoping that it's because of ride quality and cornering ability.

However, there's one at a dealer near me, it's probably easier at this point just to go test drive it.

At high speed they ride like a dream. At 25-45 over shitty road surfaces they ride like a supercharged tank. But ever since I got a full Maximum Motorsports front and back handling kit, my daily driver rides much better. It is probably because of the cheap rubber bushings among other substandard parts that Ford uses.

Lol, excellent.

So the suspension upgrade made the ride and handling better?

It made a HUGE difference. Once it was all adjusted and dialed in it rides and handles very well. Can't wait until I get a beater car so the D/D can hang until weekends and save the $ I spent due to the crappy roads in Virginia.

Well that's great news. I'm planning on improving the suspension once I get the car.

What upgrades did you make, if you don't mind me asking?
