Coolant

okay.. so i finally finshed installing my udps and emp wp early this afternoon and all but tonight when i got home from work (11ish) i checked it out and my coolant level was way low and now it got a little lower not much... but enough to tell.. well my dad said he had a little over 1/2 a gallon of some coolant and just to try and top mine off with it and i asked if it was okay to mix and he said it was fine.. well it took it all but now the coolant in the reservoir looks speckled.. kinda strange.. also.. why do you think the coolant level keeps dropping.. i cant find a leak... yet anyway.. could it be that it just hasn't filled back up 100% capacity since today is the first day i've ran it more than 30 seconds at a time after i installed the wp?

probably just hasnt been fully topped off yet, since you havent had it running for long periods the thermostat never opened to allow more coolant into the engine, im guessing that now the engine is sucking it in giving you a low coolant level, about the spekles idk, doesnt seem like it should do that, but probably nothing to worry about, maybe just shit in the system coming through

Did you burp the line after running it the first time? When you fill it directly into the reservoir air builds up and can't be released. Your engine will keep drinking the coolant until it gets filled from having the air in there. If you didn't let the air out, run your car and get it up to running temperature. Then, take it home and pop the hood. Let it cool for a few and slowly start taking the bleed cap off (it's located on the black piping in front of the alternator, the connection is a universal, square fit). You will hear the gas start to escape as you loosen it. When you hear it, stop turning and let it bleed. Rinse and repeat until there isn't any gas left. Fill what room there is left with coolant and seal it back up.

i drove it this evening to and from work (about 17 min. each way).. i saw air bubbles rising from one of the lines when i was adding the additional coolant, do you think it still needs to be burped?

Uhm, I would think that all you would need to do is fill the coolant up to the top start it ( with the cap off still) then let it run for a few minutes check the coolant levels and add what's needed and it should be good all I ever had to do after draining the whole system...

I'm pretty you can't just run you're engine with the cap off. When you're engine is running (normally, and with the cap on) the coolant heats up and builds pressure, which is why you can't take off the cap when the engine is at its operating temperature (180-210 degrees), or even when the engine is fairly hot for that matter. Even when the engine is somewhat warm you have to ease the cap off to release the pressure....so again, I don't think you can run the engine with the cap off. Just my two-cents, but correct me if I'm wrong.

And in answer to your question, yes, burb/bleed the system absolutely and you should be good to go. But about those speckles...what kind of coolant did you mix? Mixing a summer blend and winter blend wouldn't be so good, but mainly mixing 2 different types of coolant could be mixing 2 kinds of inhibitors....which could react with each other to cause numerous things....maybe speckles? If I were you I would flush the system, check your thermostat and gasket, fill it up with the entirely the same brand and type of coolant, bleed/burb, top-off.
