knocking sound

I put my exhaust on last week.( catback ) and unfortunately I had to use exhaust clamps(soon to be changed)

but yesterday I started my car and Noticed a .. almost like a knocking sound, it just came out of no where, Could it be an exhaust leak?

Genny grab a rag, better yet, have a friend grab a rag, and have them place the rag over one exhaust tip at a time. Don't need to block it off entirely; just impede the flow a fair bit. While they do that, listen under that side of the exhaust system for puffing. You will know if you hear it. Then do the same for the other side.

Perhaps the clamps need tightening, or a gasket is fubarred.

If it's an engine knock, you will know that by listening under the hood. If it's a rod or main bearing, it will be a fairly deep, loud knock. With the engine running, you can also try putting the blade of a screw driver on top of each cam cover. Grasp the handle in your hand, with your thumb over the end of the screwdriver handle. Put your ear on your thumb. That will give you a pretty good listen to the inside of the engine.

Mind any moving parts, ofc.

Yes that's typically how they start. Just out of the blue. How many miles on the car?

I highly doubt it is cheaper to find a 2003+ engine for cheaper than it will be to rebuild the one that is in there, don't you think?

yeah , we would do it ourselves well mostly my boyfriend but I help a little haha.. we replaced the heads on my explorer and it cost me about 700 bucks for new heads, Im assuming this will be a little more costly since my heads are aluminum and the explorer heads were not......but while I am in there I might as well make some improvements also ( do they make smog legal cams?)

this may not be so bad after all. haha.

the only problem I have with buying a used engine and putting it in there, is I don't know the problems the new engine is going to have, if I take apart the one I have, I can see stuff that might be going bad and replace it , and probably all for the cost of buying a used engine, that may need work anyways.

My boyfriend is off doing the Rubicon jeep trail this week so I wont beable to talk to him about it until wednesday , so I guess I just wont drive it until then..

If it does need a new bottom end, that is the perfect time to go with a forged rotating assembly....so you can handle 18 psi from the new supercharger your bf will be buying you for Christmas.
