build up your auto before you start doing manual valve body swaps. The stock tranny isn't the strongest thing around. I blew mine at 18k miles and now its blown again at 40k...worst part is i dont really get on the gas.

Since your friend has a wrecked car, it will be a pretty straight forward swap...assuming all of his parts are in good shape. If i were you i'd take most of his support accessories and use them to get it setup...i wouldnt waste the time on that tranny though. Ford swapped to a better one in late 01, can't remember the model number though...think it was 3650 on the older ones then t45 on the newer ones but dont quote me on that. If you are planning on putting more power to the ground down the road, during the swap would be a perfect time to upgrade to a built tranny.

why are the 3650 better? Can I use most of the 99 tranny parts and then change it or no?

me and doc did a manual swap on his mach not too long ago. its not that bad, ist pretty strait foward. if you have a parts car right there, its easy and all the parts are there. the t45 is a nicer trans imo, but stock for stock the 3650 is a little stronger. the t45 has minor issues with 3/4 fork, and reverse, the 3650 has a rep of not liking aggresive 3-4 shifts, and has minor 3/4 fork issues if abused. the 4r70 and 4r75 are pretty strong in stock form, they however can not be down shifted manually, they drop line pressure and thats their #1 killer. there is a stand alone pcm for the 4r series trans, i do not know if it eliminates the line pressure issue.

I prefer the 45 - the 3650 is crap. The syncros go out in them like there is no tomorrow.

my mach has the 3650, and i hate it, blew a 2nd gear syncro already, locks me out of first sometimes, unless im at a dead stop, and i never even powershifted it, maybe im just running into bad luck, but i hear alot of bad stories about the 3650

and how do you shift with a manual minus the clutch, i know how to do it on my stick but that requires matching the rpms and thats not efficent

how does it work with the manual valve body? or do you just push the auto stick into a postion that says for example

1
2
3
4
and you just slid it up and down to choose gears? never heard of one of those

its just an auto, but you have to select the gear you want it in. the trans does not shift at all on its own, you manually select the gearing. i do not recommend it for street use at all.

big time +1 there.

You will not see any benefits out of it unless you are making serious power.
