Idle is wild!

I just got finished installing my Trickflow TB/Plenum!

At idle the car is at around 500 rpm and when I touch the gas it jumps to 3,000 RPMS and then slowly drops back down to about to 500 rpms.

Any suggestions on adjustment?

Also, my odometer went blank for a second and now the mileage doesn't show just a bunch of lines.

Why?

John

sounds like a vacuum leak. check all your connections, hoses and check the torque on the bolts to make sure they're not loose or anything...
i doubt the odometer problem is related to the tb/plenum issue...

^^^^ what they said man vaccum leak

As far as the odometer goes thats gotta be linked to your gauge cluster somehow it shouldnt have been affected by the tb/plenum.

Did you disconnect the battery for 5-7 minutes to reset the Keep Alive Memory? One of the things learned and stored in the KAM is idle fuel trim.

Just after you install (actually while you are installing) any new intake component after the MAF it's a good idea to reset the KAM.

Thanks for the quick response guys!

I had already checked for vacuum leaks but everything is pretty snug. I didn't disconnect the battery so I'm going to try that and see if the KAM resets.

Thanks Again!

I disconnected the battery this morning for about 15 minutes and then turned the car on and let it run for around 20 minutes while it tried to reset but what it does is idle around 600 -900 rpms and when I touch the throttle it stays at around 1900 rpm for a minute and then drops down. I have the negative disconnected right now and I'm going to leave it disconnected for about an hour and then reconnect it and see if it works. I checked all the hose connections to the Plenum and they all looked OK so I don't think it's vacuum. From what I understand it, the cable that runs parallel to the throttle cable is the cruise control cable but I don't ahve cruise control so I didn't hook it up. Do you think the return spring may be weak and I need a stronger return on the throttle?

You only need to disconnect it for 5-7 minutes to reset the KAM, and then it takes 15 minutes of idling to learn the base settings (which you did) and then some drive cycles to fully adapt.

The OEM return spring is pretty strong and generally does what is needed.

There are two possibilities that I see:

1. The IAC is sticking, some have cleaned the IAC with various spray can stuff but the manual says it should not be cleaned and should be replaced;

2. You could try backing off the idle stop screw 1/6 turn or so, and once again reset the KAM, this should not have to be done however many (a lot of Accufab TB buyers) have reported t solved their idle problem;

I'll try the IAC cleaning and see what that does!

This morning when I drove the car to work, once it got to operating temp the idle would stay around 2100 rpms then drop after a minute or so to 600 rpms. It would backfire a little here and there along with it smelling really rich. Also, when I'm in the low rpms(1,000 - 2,000) it feels like the car stalls a little.

Your IAC isn't just going to work then not work unless you dropped it or something. Cleaning it with carb/brake cleaner isn't a bad idea either way though. I would say it's vacuum related even if you think it isn't because you stated that the Idle goes under the normal.

Most problems I've seen with Aftermarket TB's is they are poor at metering the air so 95% of them need to have the decay rate reset with a tuner. But that has to do with Idle hang and slow idle return. I would say it's a combination of a Vacuum leak and Decay problem.

Hmmmm....you may just be right! I pulled the IAC and doused it in WD-40 then put it back on. The car idles at around 700 rpms. Sounds like I have a real lopey cam! Problem is when I even tap on the gas it goes to around 2100 rpm and stays there for a second and then slowly drops when it's not quite at operating temp but as soon as I get it to operating temp it'll hold at 2100 rpm for a minute or so then I'll hear it backfire mildly not a bang but a slight backfire then it'll go back down to 700 rpm.
I've heard that the Trickflow TB's sometimes stick so I'm wondering if maybe my problem is the return spring is too light for the new TB and that I need a heavier one.
