traction control?

hi, im new here i have a 02 gt 5 speed! my question is how does traction control work. I floored it in 1st gear til about 5k and then hit 2nd kinda hard then the car started bogging down and the little tire spinning light came on in the dash. is that cause i had traction control on? if someone could explain how the traction control works i would greatly appreciate it. thanks

It pulls timing and I think fuel to limit power to prevent wheel spin. You can turn it off permanently with a hand held tuner, or just turn it off with the switch.

Here's what I found...

"The traction control was a Bosch system that reduced wheel spin. The system worked in a way that when wheel spin was sensed the ignition timing was shut off, fuel cut back, and the brakes activated on either one wheel or both depending on the need. This is the order in which the system reacts."
