Auto shift points

I was wondering where the best shift points for an automatic would be at? At the point of the power band for each gear pretty much or higher?

And how about shift pressure? Would it be best increase it?

Thanks in advance.

I have mine set on my diablo at 5750 which is redline. You don't want to go much higher than that because your not making much power past 6k. I think stock limiter kicks in at 6050 but I have mine bumped up to 6250 for the occasional manual shift past 5750. These cars pull much harder than what I was use to in my 1991 5.0 mustang gt. So getting to redline doesn't take long at all. You will notice the decrease in power at or around 6k so there is no point going any higher. Valvetrain becomes an issue past that point and the changes of damaging anything else in the engine becomes greater too.

The reason for me setting the shift point at that rpm was to get maximum acceleration from second gear as there is a pretty big drop in the rpm's because of the gear ratio change in the transmission. Stock shift settings I think are around 5200 to 5400...can't remember? Each gear's stock shift setting is a little different from one gear to the next but I just set all my shift points to redline(5750). This combo has worked for me but others might have a different opinion as to what works best with them. Also manuals might shift there cars a little different because they don't have such a big drop in rpms between each gear...especially from the 1 to 2...like the auto's have.

I have my pressure's to the max on all gears but I have heard that it is unsafe to use a tuner to do that. You will get varying opinions on that?? But so far I have drove about 5000 miles with my tuner and no problems...it is not my daily driver either nor do I beat on it at every chance I get...so that could be why I am not seeing any problems but I do believe that you should do the j-mod to increase the shift firmness of the 4r70w...it is widely known as the safest method to use.

depends on what you have done to the car. Most of the time on a stock setup the shift points are pretty close. you can go a couple hundred higher but there realy isn't any point unless you have some mods to help you make power up there.

doc said it best depends on your mods, I have mine set to shift at 6000 which actually takes place at 6200 since doing cams and springs.

the best thing to do is have it dyno tuned first. that way you know where your power is. remember, that stock, the GT's make their most hp right about 5,200. when i dyno'd my 02 auto GT, i had basically all the boltons except for headers......

and even then, it started falling around 5,200-300 rpm

and if i remember correctly, the computer shifts it at about 5,800 under WOT. by that time, the motor has no power, especially if stock.....

dont quote me on any of this. its just from my experiences and what i have read.
