We used a punch then used a tap to make the threads.

jack up your car. support it with jackstands. crawl underneath. then extend your dominant hand, then extend your index finger. now, rapidly hit your oil pan with your index finger! now you have successfully tapped your oil pan!

haha sorry couldnt resist, im not possitive, but i know this has been asked before... search?

Just like they said. You also might wanna change the oil in case any shavings get in it.

yes use a punch that rolls the metal in so you have something to tap. its not hard just take your time and dont make it to big. put grease on the tap to hold any metal shavings.

+1. Do a quick mock up to find the spot you want to tap into, scratch a small 'X', and than I recomend removing your pan. That way you can properly clean out any metal shavings. It is just a little extra step that can save you a lot of problems later on.

a center punch might help you get through it a lil easier because it is pointed or at least it might get you a good hole started then you can increse the size of the punch if need be

On vortechs site in the support section is directions for tapping the oil pan in section for installing the s-trim on the 96-04 mustangs. It's a PDF file. It's not hard and good luck.

I drilled it out and tapped it sucessfully. Used a standard drill bit which didnt work so well, I ended up wit an oval hole. So i bought one of the cone shaped hole saws and it worked great. Then tapped it ever so carefully, Got the AN fitting set in and its all good. Get a nice tight fit too. Thanx for the help guys

nope tapped it on the car, used alot of oil and cleaned the bits and tap often. Then stuck a magnet in side only picked up a few small pieces of metal. I drained the oil and then ran a spare quart through the hole to catch anythin left. Havent run the car yet, got a issues with the intercooler piping. As far as i can tell though its all good.

Tapping isn't as scary as the drilling. Good luck with your project.
