Alt ????

So my altenator is garbage again. the 2nd one in under a year. Has anyone heard of this? The issue is that it passes the on car test and the machine test so AZ didnt want to give me a new one under warranty. Once the altenator had been running for about 10 minutes, it would fail and kill the battery out. So i finally got a new one from them and POOF! it works like a champ.

Anyone have an explanation as to why ive used up 2 alts. in under a year? No aftermarket stereo is installed.... Thanks

+1..... They are cheaper for a reason. I worked at Checker for a few years and you wouldnt believe how many new alt, starters, batteries...etc I saw come back.

you would think that it being an ACdelco part it would last a little while. Oh well, garbage is garbage.

it is stuff like this that makes your head spin into thinking there is something more serious wrong with the car. perhaps a grounding issue, belt tension, or other intermittent issue you can't put your finger on easily.

Back when I was in the import world I went through 2 alt's in 8 months. I used an outfit online that refurbed them and a great price. Except with these guys it was a simple email stating what I tried and what i saw...3 days later with no reply to the email I got another replacment at my doorstep with instructions to send the "faulty" one back. You get what you pay for.

I think the company is PA Performance (could be wrong) MM&FF wrote up an article not too long ago praising their alternators and you can get them all the way up to 200amps. Might be worth looking into, or ask on here if anyone is running them. What about things like Underdrive pulleys? I've heard that rarely it can slow the alternator just enough to do that.

Of course if the machine checks out the alternator as good and what not, maybe the issue is your wiring. I'd recommend spending 10 dollars on some 4 gauge wiring and putting it in there. Have you ever probed the wiring with a voltmeter? Has it gotten pinched in anything, stuff like that can all make a huge impact, especially here in the north it's easy for wiring to get corroded on the inside and not be able to properly carry a charge.

Anyway, moral of the story: Check your wiring first then replace with a quality alt if it's not the problem.
