wierd squeak

My car has developed an odd squeak coming from the pulleys. I looked at it and I think it's the tensioner. A mechanic told me it could be a little spring inside the tensioner or could I just need a whole new tensioner pulley?

Mine does it from idle all the way to 3500 or so. It squeaks faster as rpm's increase.

Put a small glob of Dielectric Grease on the rib side of the belt with your finger. You will be surprised the noise will disapear.

dielectric grease is a NON-conducting grease that seals out moisture and therefore prevents corrosion on electrical componants. I used to use the stuff on my waverunner on the battery terminals to keep them from corroding.

Now as to why someone would put ANY kind of grease on the belts is a question I would like answered. The squeking is typically a sign that you need to inspect your belts. If they are worn they may squeak and it is time to replace. If they are new and recently installed they may have stretched a bit and just need adjustment.

Tho I am a newb with the fords myself and the serpentine belt. My old rig had seperate belts for all the accessories.

The belt's in good shape. So your saying to check the tension? Belt could be slipping?

My understanding is just that. squeaking is the belt slipping cause by the friction which if left alone can cause premature failure. This is all void if the squeak isn't comeing from the belt but the bearing behind one of the pullies

I think you can buy "belt dressing" at an autoparts store. not sure if it is a "grease" or not or if it is even recomended to use. maybe one of the gurus around here can help out a bit more.

i believe the belt dressing they sell isnt made of grease but instead its made of wax.

Belt dressing is a siloconized wax like stuff that is supposed to make the belt more pliable (like new).

The idler pulley prolly does squeak, that's why there are a couple of companies that sell new ones. Check Summit or whatever your personal poison is...

IMO it may be worth it to just change the pulley...

Another thought may be that it is a throw out bearing (mine squeaks like crazy at idle with the clutch pedal out).

I'm going to change the pulley. Does anyone know if it's easy to do?
